Chapter 19 Healing Instincts

ELOISE.

Ouch! That hurts. Why will you do that?Summer screamed, clutching the hand I smacked her. Tears streamed down her face, making her look like a wounded doll. You’re just trying to bully me in front of everyone, you can’t suggest the fact that I found something better than what you found.

I didn’t flinch; I just reached down and grabbed the poisonous flower by its base, holding it right in front of her face.

Look at the gills, Summer,I said in a cold but steady voice. This is a death bell; it carries a potent nerve toxin. If the spores had touched your skin even for a second, your heart would have stopped within minutes. Do you want to die for being wrong, or because you can’t admit that what I’m saying is right?

The silence that followed was heavy; the drones hovered close, their lenses zooming in on the deadly fungus.

She’s right. We heard the voice of a man and looked in the direction from which it came. He was wearing black, and he looked like 1 security man. They had security following us all this time?

We just got a call from one of the pack healers watching the show, and she said Eloise is right, so please drop the plant slowly and ently. The man said, and I sighed in reliefsomeone who could finally attest to what I was saying. I dropped the flower mmediately, and Summer jumped back.

She turned pale, her mouth hanging open. HowI just wanted to help! How was I supposed to know? You didn’t have to hit me, hough.

I warned you.I reminded her. But you were too busy staring at the cameras to listen.”

Jolly stepped forward, crossing her arms. Honestly, Summer. Stop crying, she just saved your life, and maybe a little thanks will lo, and maybe if you spent less time acting like a victim and more time learning, you wouldn’t be so useless.

latalie nodded in agreement. It’s embarrassing. We are supposed to be future Lunas, not toddlers.

jummer’s face went from white to a deep, angry red. I could tell that she was furious that her innocent act was failing. Before she ould say another word, a bloodcurdling scream echoed through the trees,

We all turned. A few yards away, one of the pack guards who was helping with the heavy equipment had collapsed. He was Clutching his ankle, and his face was already turning a sickly shade of grey.

Scorpion!Someone shouted.

A large, black, shadow stinger, one of the most venomous scorpions in our territory, was scurrying away into the rocks.

Raymond. The elder shouted, rushing over to meet the injured man.

Don’t move. The guard was already sweating, and he began to vomit. The venom of a shadow stinger worked fast, if he didn’t get help in the next ten minutes, he was going to be a dead man.

We need to get him back to the pack!Summer cried out It’s too dangerous here! Let’s leave!

While the others panicked, my body moved of its own accord. It was like a memory in my muscle that I didn’t even know I had. I dashed toward a patch of yellow weeds near the creek.

1/2

Eloise, what are you doing? The elder called out.

I didn’t answer. I grabbed a handful of the yellow plants; they were the sun drop herbs. I didn’t know how I knew the name, but i knew exactly what they were for. I grabbed two flat stones, placed the herbs between them, and began grinding them into a thick, green paste.

I rushed to the guard’s side. He was shaking now, and his breath was coming in ragged gasps.

Hold him down,I commanded. The authority in my voice was so strong that the two other guards obeyed immediately.

I took a small knife from my belt, I made a quick and clean cut over the sting, and pressed the green paste into the wound. It’s going to sting,I whispered.

As the herb touched the skin, the guard let out a groan, but within seconds, the shaking stopped. His breathing slowed down, and the grey color in his face began to fade back to a regular tan.

The elder watched me in total shock. Thatthat is an ancient healing technique. How do you know the sun drops cure? Even our best pack healers struggled with that.

looked at my greenstained hands. I don’t know,I said honestly. I just knew.

The medical team arrived ten minutes later with the antivenom. But after checking the guard, the healer looked at me with wide eyes.

You already neutralized the toxin, the healer said, sounding amazed. You saved his life. If you hadn’t done this, he wouldn’t have made it to the pack.”

The other girls started clapping, and even Dolly and Natalie looked at me with genuine respect.

That was amazing, Eloise,Lex whispered, giving me a small smile. You really are a leader.
