THE TABLES TURN.

The market trial was a total whirlwind, but while I was thriving and enjoying it, Summer’s stall was a mess. It was falling apart, and I could hear her teammates, Sarah, Dolly, and Chloe, getting increasingly frustrated.

They were all covered in chicken blood and feathers. Summer stood back with her arms crossed, looking like she was at a garden party instead of a competition.

“Summer, are you actually going to do anything?” Chloe snapped, wiping sweat from her forehead with a dirty sleeve. “We have been doing all the work for the past two hours, and you have just been standing there like a fucking statue.”

Summer let out a dramatic sigh, like Chloe was overreacting. “Ive told you guys, the smell of blood makes me feel nauseous, besides, I’m the face of this group, I’m here to attract the high–end customers, not do grunt work,” she said, picking at her nails.

“And how many customers have you brought in since we started? You have only chased customers to other stalls, you stuck–up bitch!” Dolly said in a frustrated tone.

“Everyone is on Eloise’s line. If we don’t sell something soon, we will lose you, idiot.” Sarah added.

“Oh, how I wish I were in Eloise’s group.”

At that moment, a chicken that was yet to die shook, and its blood splattered everywhere, including onto Summer’s cheek. She shrieked so loud that I’m sure that the birds flew off their trees. In a fit of rage, she grabbed the almost dead chicken and threw it

away.

“Get it away from me!” she screamed.

The chicken flew through the air and landed right in the arms of a little girl who was walking by with her mother. The poor child burst into tears, and the crowd immediately began to murmur.

“How mean!” an old woman said, “She’s such a monster.”

Summer didn’t even apologise, she looked disgusted by everyone around her.

I didn’t stop to watch the drama; I kept my head down and kept working. By the time the sun began to set, my stall was completely empty. I had sold every single piece of meat and the side dish I displayed.

The Elder approached our stalls while looking at the ledgers where we record our sales.

“The winner of today’s challenge is Eloise and her team,” the Elder announced.

Summer’s jaw dropped. She looked like she had just swallowed a lemon or something bitter,

We were led back to the maiden house, and as winners, we got to pick the best ingredients that suited us. I walked away with a giant shrimp, crab, and fresh herbs. That night, I took over the kitchen; I didn’t mind at all. Cooking helped me clear my head.

Soon enough, the smell of garlic and seafood filled the house; even the girls who weren’t on my team couldn’t help but linger by the door. I made enough for everyone, though. Despite the competition, I wasn’t going to let anyone go hungry.

After dinner, we all gathered around the large stone firepit in the courtyard. The fire crackled, casting long shadows across the walls. Usually, the girls were chatty, but tonight, a heavy silence hung over us.

“I heard the last mission is the hardest,” one of the girls whispered with a trembling voice. “I heard some girls in the past didn’t even make it through.”

Low–key, I couldn’t believe that the Luna Trials were coming to an end, though I was happy to get comfortable again. I would miss the adrenaline of always wanting to win something.

“Im scared,” another girl admitted. “What if it’s something we can’t handle? We have already been through so much.”

“Listen to me, guys,” I said with a firm and calm voice, and all eyes turned to me. “We have been here for days, and we have tested, pushed, and humiliated. But look at us, we are still standing. The last trial is just one final hurdle to overcome. Don’t let the challenge win by being scared before you even start. We are stronger than this, and we can definitely do this.”

A few girls nodded, looking a bit more hopeful.

“Essy for you to say.” Summer scoffed from the shadows, rolling her eyes. “You’re just a lucky brat who loves playing with the dirt, after all, you lived with the rogues. Some of us actually have reputations to protect.”

“Good thing we weren’t talking to you.” Lex, who was always silent, replied to her.

“Ignore her,” I said to Lex, and we went on about our business.

“Thank you, Eloise,” Sarah said. “You’re right, we can actually do this.”

The moment was interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps. The Elder entered the courtyard, holding a small wooden box.

“You have all worked hard,” the Elder said. “And as a result of working hard as usual, you guys are permitted to have your phone, and it’s for the rest of the night.” The girls whooped. “But, the downside today is that the losing team won’t have their phones with them for the night, and that should be a boost to do better in the next challenge,” the Elder said, and everybody on Summer’s team gasped.

“Oh my goodness, this is all Summer’s fault,” Sarah said.

“I hope I’m not in a group with you next time,” Dolly said, looking at Summer.

“But this isn’t fair. We all have things we can do and things we can’t do.” Summer whined.

“But is there anything you can do?” Chloe said coldly and walked to her room angrily, slamming the door behind her in a fit of rage.

Every other person rushed forward to get their devices, and I took mine and headed to my room, switching it on. My heart was thumping against my ribs. I wanted to know what the outside world was saying about me. I was trying not to care, but I was only human after all.

I turned the screen on, and the notifications exploded; even my phone nearly froze from the sheer volume of notifications.

I opened the livestream app and saw the replays.
