I didn’t waste a second. While the other girls were screaming and trying to protect their hair from the flapping wings, I lunged forward, I grew up learning that if you didn’t fight for what you wanted, you went hungry. A little chicken wasn’t going to scare me.

4 caught a chicken by its leg in one swift motion, before it could escape again. I moved to the preparation station. I didn’t flinch; I had seen enough blood in my life not to be bothered by that of a chicken. With practiced movements, I handled the task, killing it, plucking the feathers, and cutting it into pieces with a sharp knife.

The other girls stopped and stared, their faces turning pale.

Oh my goodness,Dolly whispered, looking af me with wide eyes. Eloise, you actually know how to do that? It’s so messy.”

Where did you learn ti be so fast?another girl asked, sounding impressed despite her own situation.

Life is messy,I replied simply, my hands never stopping. If you want to eat, you can’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.

Summer, who was standing as far away as possible while wearing white silk, let out a loud and dramatic gasp.

It’s absolutely disgusting, she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me. You are a monster, Eloise. How can you be so cruel to a poor, innocent animal? U can’t even look at you! It’s barbaric!

I stopped for a moment and looked her up and down. A cold smoke touched my lips.

Cruel, Summer?I asked with a voice that was dripping with sarcasm. Thats funny coming from you. Aren’t those boots you’re wearing genuine calfskin? And that designer belt, isn’t that real alligator?

Summer’s face went from red to pale.

Thats different, those are high fashion.

No, it’s the same,I countered, stepping closer to her. The only difference is that you pay someone else to do the barbaricpart so you can look pretty. At least, I’m honest about where my dinner comes from, spare me the fake fucking act.

It’s nnot real leather!she blurted out, looking panicked.

I raised an eyebrow, knowing precisely the brand she was wearing. Really? Because that brand’s entire reputation is built on using the finest exotic leathers. If you’re telling us it’s fake, you’re essentially accusing the company of fraud. Aren’t you supposed to be their new brand ambassador?

Summer choked on her words; she realised she had just trapped herself. If she admitted it was real, she looked like a hypocrite. If she insisted it was fake, she could lose her multimillion dollar contract for lying about the product.

…..just meant……she stuttered, her eyes darting around. Anyways, we are supposed to be selling, not talking about my clothes, she digressed.

She turned away quickly, desperate to escape the conversation, but I could see her hands shaking with anger. She was humiliated, and everyone saw it.

I went back to work. Once the chickens were cleaned, I started the roasting process. Instead of just throwing them over the fire, I found some local herbs and spices in the market to give them a rich, golden color and an amazing smell.

Soon, the aroma of my roasted chicken began to drift through the entire market, and people started to gather.

Is that for sale, miss?an old man asked, leaning over the counter.

Yes, it is,I said with a warm smile. And if you buy a whole chicken, I’ll cut it right up here for you so it’s ready for your family lunch. I can even give you a side

Of those roasted peppers I made.

I’ll take two!he said, handing over the money. The cries grew as I filleted the meat, offered cooking tips, and served the customers with a speed that left the other girls behind.

Try this seasoning, ma’am, it’s a perfect fit for toasting chicken,I told a woman, handing over a neatly wrapped package to her.

Meanwhile, Summer’s stall was a disaster. She refused to touch the chickens; she had put on long rubber gloves and was standing three feet away, holding her nose.

Get the chicken yourself!she snapped at a customer who asked for help.

Cant you see I’m busy?

Just put the money in the jar,” she screamed.
