I went to Damon’s club to surprise him and surprisingly met Zara, who was working as a bartender and filling in for her younger sister who had exams.

When she saw me, she was quite happy and proceeded to ask me questions about the date with Zara.

“Your date didn’t go well then,” Zara says, brushing past me to grab a bottle of tequila.

“It went okay,” I reply, shoveling ice into two glasses. “I’m still in two minds.”

“Well, you know where to find me if you need someone to bounce her out of your life.”

Zara moves away to pour the shots of tequila, and Lily steps in beside me to use the soda tap. Lily was a worker in this club who helped me out whenever I was here.

“Thanks for helping out.”

“The new girl didn’t work out?” I ask, sliding two whiskeys and ice across the bar to the customer, a famous country music singer. She hands me her card to pay for the drinks. Noticing that the third girl who was hired a few days ago was no longer here.

“You didn’t hear?” Lily says, running a customer’s card through the card machine. “Damon fired her this afternoon.”

“He fired her, why?”

“He didn’t fire her,” Zara says, walking past to get some limes. “She quit.”

Lily leans close so only I can hear. “Apparently she hit on him in his office. Took her clothes off and everything,” she said and my head whipped to her immediately.

“Wait, what? She stripped in front of my husband?”

Lily kept quiet immediately as if she didn’t know that she had been talking to his wife since the conversation started.

“She’s been lusting after him for weeks,” Lily adds. “Finally made her play for him.”

Zara leans in too. “Crashed and burned, though.”

“I’ll go meet him now.” The jealousy that snaked through my veins and blood was deadly. If the girl were in my line of view right now, only the Goddess knew what I would have done to her.

He’s sitting behind his desk and I lean against the doorframe, watching him.

“If you linger in that doorway much longer, I’m going to have to start charging you rent, ma,” he says, not looking up. The fact that he could already feel my presence without having to talk.

I walk in and approach his desk. But I don’t say anything. I’m too busy admiring the way he looks, and trying to choose words carefully so I don’t sound like an idiot.

He’s discarded his suit jacket over the back of the chair, and his white shirt is open enough that I can see the top of the tattoos on his chest. His long lashes fan his high cheekbones as he reads whatever it is in front of him on the desk.

“Can I help you with something, Ma?”

Goose bumps spread across my skin Yes, I want you to kiss me again.

“Just thought I’d pop my head in to say hello after a long day of work.

He looks up, and his black eyes focus on me. Something moves through his expression, but I can’t make it out.

“I heard what happened,” I started.

He cocks an eyebrow. “What happened?”

“With the new girl. Is it true?”

Damn, why did that come out sounding so jealous?

He picks up on it and sits back in his chair. “Is what true?”

“That she took off her clothes and propositioned you?”

A small smile tugs at the corner of his lips. “There was some removal of clothes.”

It’s a poor choice of words, because in my head, I see both of them removing clothes and making out, and it drives me crazy with jealousy. It’s so irrational and ridiculous, yet tell that to my mind. Maybe Zara and Lily got it wrong, and something happened. Which sends another bout of insanity into my brain.

“And did anything happen?” I ask.
