Chapter 30 The Law Of The Wild

The air was thick, clinging to my skin like a second layer of sweat. I woke up before the sun was entirely over the horizon, my wolf stretching and yawning inside my mind. My senses were dialed to an eleven. I could hear the rhythmic breathing of Dolly and Natalie beside me, as well as Lex’s.

Summer had spent the night on a jagged rick pile because she refused to help us build the lean–to. She thought she was too high status to touch mud. Now, as the light touched her face, she looked like a wreck; her expensive silk shirt was torn, and her eyes looked puffy.

“I really can’t believe this!” Summer hissed, her voice cracking as she stood up. She looked at the drone hovering a few feet away, her expression shifting into a fake and trembling pout. “My brothers and parents are going to hear about how I’m being treated. The Lockwood family doesn’t forget insults.”

I crawled out of the shelter, stretching my limbs. My muscles felt ready for the day’s task. “Your brother isn’t here, Summer. And neither is your maid. If you want to survive the next eighteen hours or so, you might want to stop worrying about your reputation and start worrying about your stomach.”

“Dont talk to me, you nameless stray,” she snapped, though her growl lacked any real power or grit; she was weak from hunger and looked so pathetic to me.

Dolly emerged next. “God, I’m starving, my wolf is literally pacing circles in my head. Eloise, do you think there’s something else to eat besides coconuts? I don’t think I can crack a mother one without breaking a tooth, plus my head aches from eating a lot of coconuts since morning.”

I looked towards the stream we found yesterday. The water was clear, and I’d seen shadows darting beneath the surface. “Im going to try to catch us some breakfast. If we don’t eat protein soon, we are going to lose our edge, and we need to be strong to survive here.”

I grabbed the long branch I had spent an hour carving into a spear the night before. The tip was fire–hardened and sharp enough to pierce the hide. I felt the weight of it in my hand; it felt solid.

“Wait, can we come?” Natalie asked, with hopeful eyes, and I wonder why. I mean, it would make more sense for her ti relax. “I want to see the way you do it. Back at my home pack, we just go to the butcher, I’ve never actually hinted for real.”

“Sure,” I said with a small smile. “Just stay behind and keep quiet, we can’t make a lot of noise because our shadows as werewolves are bigger than that of humans, and the fishes can sense it, do you understand?”

We walked toward the stream, leaving a fuming Summer behind on the beach, and as we walked, Chloe leaned closer to me. “You know, back home, everybody thinks you’re entitled. We all think that’s why your parents chose Summer over you, we thought something must be awfully wrong with you since you spent time with the rogues, and some are even scared of you, that you have the rogue blood now, but seeing time with you up close is so different, you have a way of moving, it’s like the forest belongs to you.”

I tightened my grip on the spear. “I spent a lot of time in places like this. When you have nothing but your wolf, you realise that nature isn’t your enemy, but your friend. You just have to know how to listen to it. I didn’t have a lot of choice since I was kidnapped; it wasn’t like I went to enjoy, I went through tough times.”

I didn’t tell them the whole story, that those years I was missing were spent running through forests like this one, dodging rogues and learning to kill just to see the next sunrise.

At the stream, I added in until then, cool water hit my knees. I stood perfectly still; this was a move I’ve done a thousand times. I became a part of the landscape, my wolf narrowed her eyes, focusing on the shimmering movements in the water.

With a fast strike, I plunged the spear into the water, and a second later, I lifted it high. A large, thrashing river trout pinned to the

end.

“Whoa!” Dolly exclaimed. “That was so fast, I didn’t even see the fish move.”

“It’s about the vibration,” I said, wading back to the bank. “Dont look at where the fish is, look at where the water ripples and you’ll find your catch.”

I caught three more, enough to give us all solid meals. Back at the camp, I cleaned up with a few swipes of my knife. I felt a strange warmth on my neck, the same feeling I get anytime Damom is close to me. I knew he wasn’t here; he was just watching me. I didn’t understand why I was getting aware this much, I could imagine him sitting in the leather room in his office, his beautiful eyes fixed ok the screen, a smirk tugging at his lips as he watched me handle the blade.

Whatever, I thought as I tried as much as possible to dismiss the thought of Damon from my mind.

The smell of thentieh hitting the fire was intoxicating. Even Summer, who was sitting miles away, started drifting closer, her nose twitching.

“That smells weird,” she says with a disgusted look on her face, but her stomach betrays her as it lets out a loud growl for all of us to hear, and everybody laughs.
