I could feel the heat of a hundred gazes on my skin. The backless dress felt like an invitation for their eyes to linger on my spine, and I didn’t shrink away; I held my head high instead.

“Is that the Queen?” I heard one girl whisper to her friend.

“Yes, she’s the one who performed in the Luna trials and won.”

Suddenly, a flash went off, then another, and another. People weren’t even trying to be subtle anymore; they weren’t trying to hide that they were doing it; they were just blatantly doing it. They were taking pictures, making videos, documenting whatever. Lex was still waving from the sofa, and when I finally reached her, she pulled me into a hug.

“Look at you!” she squealed. “You look so good, and everybody can’t keep their eyes off you,” she shrieked, and I smiled but slowly because this Lex was different.

The normally quiet Lex barely spoke. Minding her business and differently. She must be tipsy.

“Drinking already?” I asked her, and she shrugged.

Before she could answer, a young woman wearing a shimmering dress stepped forward. She looked nervous, her hand trembling slightly as she looked at me.

“Im so sorry to bother you,” she said, her voice full of genuine admiration. “But I just had to say, I watched the rails and what you did out there, you were so brave, and those things that you said about omegas, I truly appreciate you for that. Your speech was what made my best friend change. She’s an omega too, and she’s always feeling like she didn’t deserve love because she was weak, but she has gotten her confidence now and has finally stopped the suicidal attempts. I’m so grateful to you for being who you are, My Queen. I hope you find everything lovely, ma’am,” she says, and I smile.

“Thank you, and tell your friend always to be strong and not let anyone walk all over her just because she was born a certain way. She has no control over that. Okay?” I replied, and she nodded, then walked away, squealing.

“Okay, that was amazing. I’m thrilled that you were chosen as the Queen. See the way you just talked to that girl, and you look so relaxed while doing it, like you’re not being forced. You’re going to have a profound influence on these kids. I’m so proud of you.” Lex said, and I laughed.

“Girl, thank you. And you look so different and feel like a different person. You weren’t always this out there. Like you used to be quiet, or was the Lex I knew at the trials a sham?” I asked her, and she relaxed a bit. Sipping from the alcohol in her glass.

“Umm. I–I don’t know. I guess I’ve always been quiet. I’m trying to forget my troubles,” she said, and I frowned.

“Is everything okay? You know you can always talk to me when you want to, right?” I asked her, and she shrugged.

“Im not sure about that. I’m not sure what level of friendship we are on. I don’t want to disturb you about things that are not relevant. Plus, you’re the Queen, I’m sure you have better things to do with your time,” she said in a low voice.

She sounded like she felt lonely. I didn’t like that; I felt bad that I hadn’t reached out to her first, as I had said I would. I just forgot. Everything is going on with my family, and then there’s Damon.

I sighed before replying to her.

“Lex, I’m sorry if I made you doubt if there’s a friendship here. Yes, we are friends, and you’re my only friend at this point. Definitely, you can come to me when you have issues you’re dealing with. You don’t have to feel awkward about it, and regardless of my position, I always make time for my friends. I said, making sure that she understood everything I had to say.

figure out why. Still, he’s been pushing me away, and then I noticed that he was always on his phone more, and then I went to his house to surprise him with a get–well–soon package, and I found him cheating with his assistant,” she said in one breath.

“And then, he broke up with me.”

“Breathe, Lex,” I told her, and she did the breathing exercise. When she was calm, I started.

“Girl, don’t say he broke up with you. Would you have stayed with him if he didn’t?”

“No, I don’t think so,” she replied, biting hard on her lips.

“No, you would not have. Some guys are douchebags and don’t let your ex make you feel weird because he can’t keep it in his pants. If someone else asks you, just tell them he cheated.” I said, and she nodded.

“Thats the first time I’ve talked about it since it happened.”

“What are you doing here?” he asked me, and I frowned at the strange question.

“Excuse me, are you the owner of this club? Or is your father the owner?” I asked.

“I thought the King had you locked up in a cage,” he said, ignoring what I said.
