ELOISE.

We have been playing for the past hour, and it’s been okay, I guess.

I wanted them to reel, as if I didn’t know what I was doing, so to drive the point home, I did the one thing a poker player would never do. I reached out and flipped my cards face up on the table.

The room went silent, Asher and Sebastian stared at my pair of nines, their mouths twitching as they tried to laugh. In the world of highstakes gambling, showing your hand was a sin committed by rookies. It was like handing your enemy a map of your mind.

I saw Julian exchange a triumphant look with his friends. They were convinced now that I was just a pretty girl in a tight dress who had no idea how the game worked.

Damon remained perfectly still beside me. I felt the heat radiating from his body, his dark and heavy gaze fixed on me. I knew he was wondering if I was actually this clueless, or if I was playing a game far more dangerous than the one on the table. But he didn’t say a word; he just let me play with his millions as if they were pocket change.

He had refused to play because I was going to play. According to him, he wanted made me feel good. Like butterflies were all over my belly, swimming around.

the second.

I just smiled, adjusting the strap of my backless dress. Im just being careful, Julian. I’d hate to lose everything on the first few rounds.

The second round began, and the dealer slid two more cards to each of us. I peeked at mine, an Ace of hearts and a King of spades. In Texas Hold’em, this was a powerhouse starting hand.

Asher tossed in fifty thousand, and Sebastian raised it to a hundred thousand. The pressure was on.

I looked at my Ace and Kings, then sighed dramatically and pushed the cards away. I fold again.

The table erupted.

My Queen, come on!Sebastian groaned. You’ve got to take a risk eventually. You’re being way too stingy with Damon’s money. He’s wealthy, just in case you don’t know.”

Im not being stingy,I said, looking at them with wide and innocent eyes. To prove my point, I flipped my cards again. See? An Ace and a King. They don’t match; there are no pairs and no same colors. My gut told me it was a losing hand.

Julian actually started laughing this time around. She thinks Ace and King are a bad move because they aren’t the same color! Goddamn, Your Majesty, where did you find this one? She is a goldmine.”

I saw a flicker of a smile on Damon’s face. I think he was starting to see the trap I was setting. My cluelessness was the perfect bait, and Julian had swallowed it, hook, line, and sinker.

The third round began, and my heart started beating rapidly, but I kept a poker face because that was what the game was about.

The dealer handed me a seven of diamonds and an eight of spades. Trash. Complete garbage. However, the community cards, which the dealer placed in the center for everyone to see, were a Ten, a Jack, and a Queen, all diamonds.

Julian looked down at his cards, and his eyes lit up, disregarding the whole poker face thing. He probably had two pairs or a set. He shoved a massive pile of chips to the center. Let’s raise it, one hundred thousand.

I didn’t hesitate, I pushed two stacks forward. I’ll call, and let’s make it four hundred thousand.

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The joking stopped. The guys looked at me, then at the board. If I were raising this high, after being so cautious, I must have something terrifying. Yes, that must be their thought process right now.

You’re actually playing?Asher said, looked at his own weak hand, and folded.

Sebastian hesitated, looking at me, then at his own cards. Then at Damon’s predatory expression. He folded too.

Now it was just Julian and me.

Are you bluffing, Eloise?Julian sneered, though his voice lacked the earlier confidence. I’ll call, five hundred thousand.

The dealer flipped the last cardanother diamond.

I looked at the pile of money in the center, then I looked at Julia

I could see the sweat beads forming on his forehead, regardless of the AC that was blowing in the room. He was terrified that I had a good hand, a hand of diamonds.

I reached out and pushed my entire mountain of chips into the center of the table. The the quiet room.
