The silence in the room was so thick that I could practically taste the scent of Julian’s fear. As a werewolf, his pheromones were betraying him; the sharp, acrid smell of sweat and desperation filled the air.
He looked at the community cards: the Ten, Jack, Queen, and King of diamonds. If I had the Ace of Diamonds, I had a Royal Flush. If I had two diamonds, I had a flush. To him, I was no longer the goldmine he could mock. I was a predator who had just backed him into a corner.
“Well?” I prompted, tilting my head. “The clock is ticking, Julian. Over six million is at stake. Do you have the heart to play? Or are you a baby wolf that has just been barking at the big bad wolves?”
Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. His hand trembled as he hovered over the chips. He looked at Damon, maybe only seeking some confirmation or sign, but he looked at the wrong person; he would not get any sign from Damon. The only movement Damon was making was his thumb, still stroking my thigh in a slow, possessive rhythm in a way that made me want to clench my thighs together so bad, but I couldn’t because then he would know that he affected me.
“….fold.” Julian slammed his cards face down, his voice cracking.
A collective gasp rippled through the room, and I leaned back, a slow and satisfying smile spreading across my lips.
“A wise choice,” I whispered. I started pulling the mountain of chips towards me. The sound of the plastic clinking was the sweetest music I’ve heard all night.

“Wait!” Julian barked, his eyes bloodshot. “Show me. Show me what you had. You had Ace, didn’t you? You had the flush.”
I paused, my fingers lingering on the pile of wealth I’d just stripped from him. I looked at Asher and Sebastian, who were watching me with wide eyes, then I looked at Damon, who gave me a tiny nod.
With a flick of my wrist, I tossed cards face up.
The Seven of Diamonds and the Eight of Spades.
Total garbage. Not a pair. Not a straight. Or even a high card.
The room didn’t just go silent; it went dead. Julian looked like he had been struck by lightning. He froze, his mouth hanging open as he stared at the useless cards that had just cost him over six million dollars.
“You were bluffing?” he whispered, his voice trembling with rage. “With garbage? You had nothing.”
I stood up slowly, the silk of my dress grazing my skin. “I didn’t have anything, Julian. I had your ego. And I knew exactly how to use it to play you.”
“You little cheat,” Julian roared, lunging forward in an attempt to come for me, but he forgot the rules, forgot the people in the room, forgot everything but his humiliation. He grabbed a crystal glass from the table, looking like he was about to shatter it and come for me.
Before he could even draw a breath, Damon moved.
It was a blur of speed. One second, Damon was sitting next to me, and the next, his hand was clamped around Julian’s neck and wrist like a vice. The sound of Julian’s bones groaning under the pressure echoed in the quiet room.

“Careful, Julian.” Damon’s voice was a low growl that vibrated in the floorboards. “You lost. Take it like a grown–up, or I’ll make sure you never hold a deck of cards or anything else again in your miserable life.”
Julian turned pale, his eyes darting to Damon’s face. He probably saw a predator or a King that was seconds away from tearing his throat out, just like he did to Jabari. Julian’s hand went limp, and the glass thudded onto the table.
“Get out,” Damon commanded.
Julian didn’t need to be told twice; he stumbled back, tripped over his chair, and scrambled out of the room without looking back. His pride was in tatters, and his bank account was damaged.
Asher and Sebastian stayed silent, looking at me like I had just grown wings.
“Let’s go to the private lounge,” Damon said, his voice softening as he turned to me. He tucked a stray lick of hair behind my ear, his eyes burning with a mix of pride and something more profound.
We moved to the VIP room in the back of the club, away from prying eyes and gamblers. Asher, Sebastian, and Lex followed. Lex walked over to me and held my hand.
“That was amazing,” she said.
“Thank you,” I replied.
“Eloise…that was…ive never seen anything like that,” Asher said, shaking his head. “You played us all, you played the dumb girl role so well that I actually felt sorry for you. I don’t want to play against you, mehnnn.”
“I want to learn,” Sebastian added, taking Lex’s hand and holding it in his. “Seriously, teach me how to do that, and I’ll pay whatever you want for the lessons.”
Damon let out a dry chuckle, leaning against the sofa and pulling me into his side so my back was against his chest. “Save your money, Sebastian. With your IQ, you’d be paying her tuition for the rest of your life, and you still wouldn’t catch on.”

though he couldn’t help but laugh. “That was cold, Damon.”
“Hey!” Sebastian complained
“To Eloise, our Queen who turned lions into kittens,” Asher said.
I took a sip of my wine, the taste exploding on my tongue. “They weren’t lions,” I said simply. “They were just cowards who pretended they were dangerous. Once you take away their confidence, they have nothing left.”
The guys laughed, but I could see the shift in their eyes. They didn’t see me as Damon’s impulsive decision anymore. They saw me as a force to be reckoned with, and I fuck with that a lot.
After an hour of celebratory drinks and the guys begging for my secret, Damon finally stood up. He wrapped his arm around my waist, his heat seeping into the bare skin of my back.
“We are leaving,” he announced.
