Matthew’s POV
I bit into the sandwich from my lunch box, my brows furrowed in concentration. Sitting in the corner of Star Shadow pack’s temporary medical facility, I had several data sheets and medication lists spread out before me. For the past few days, I’d been helping Julia optimize the antiviral drug formula to better suit werewolf metabolism. Medical literature from the early 2000s had limited documentation on werewolf physiology, and most treatment protocols required real–time adjustments.
“If I reduce the acyclovir dosage and increase the metabolic regulator…” I murmured to myself, quickly calculating values on paper. My wolf Hati rumbled in approval from deep within my consciousness, sending a warm sense of pride.
(She’s doing well,) Hati commented, referring to Julia’s performance over the past few days.
I nodded with a smile. Seeing Julia transform from a rejected pack nurse into a temporary leader filled me with pride.
Just as I was about to modify the formula again, the medical room door was suddenly pushed open. A werewolf in his thirties rushed in, his face filled with panic. I immediately recognized him as Ryan, a member of the pack security team.
“Is Julia here?” Ryan asked urgently, anxiously scanning the room. “We need her!”
I put down my pen and stood up. “She’s out delivering medication to patients who can’t move. What’s happened?”
“It’s Emma, the former Luna,” Ryan explained, his speech quickened by nervousness. “She’s very sick, temperature over 104, and having trouble breathing. We -we don’t know what to do.”
My expression immediately turned serious. As Spring Valley’s Alpha, I understood the importance of the Luna position, even a former one. “When will Julia
be back?”
“Not for at least two hours,” a nurse organizing supplies by the door interjected. “She went to the farthest households.”
I quickly made my decision. “Take me to Emma. I have medical training and can see her before Julia returns.” I swiftly gathered some basic medications and
equipment, stuffing them into my medical bag.
Ryan’s eyes flashed with hesitation. “But Nathan might not-”
*If her condition is as bad as you say, this isn’t the time to worry about territory rules,” I interrupted, letting Alpha authority seep into my voice. “Lead the
way.”
Ryan nodded and led me through the community center hallways to a small cottage at the edge of the pack territory. Inside, the light was dim, and the air
filled with the scent of illness and sorrow.
Emma Reynolds lay in the bedroom, her frail body shivering slightly under the blankets. Her once beautiful golden hair now lacked luster, her cheeks were sunken, and dark circles surrounded her eyes. Two elderly female werewolves were caring for her, and they exchanged nervous glances when I entered.
“Alpha Collins,” one recognized me, her voice filled with respect and unease. “We’re not sure if-
‘Please give me some space,” I said kindly but firmly, already in professional mode. I placed my medical bag on the bedside table and took out an electronic thermometer and stethoscope. “I need to check her condition.”
The women stepped aside, and I began examining Emma’s vital signs. Her pulse was weak and rapid, her lungs had slight crackles, and her skin burned.

Chapter 190
When I checked her eye response, she weakly opened them.
“Who are you?” Her voice was barely a whisper.
Tm Matthew Collins, Alpha of Spring Valley,” I answered softly. “I’m at Star Shadow helping with the flu crisis. Can you tell me how you’re feeling?”
Emma’s gaze was unfocused. “Cold… very cold… though I know I’m feverish.”
I nodded and continued my examination. After several minutes of assessment, I confirmed these were indeed symptoms of werewolf flu, but something was off. Emma’s wolf–the animal part within every werewolf’s consciousness–seemed unusually quiet, showing no normal healing response.
“What’s your wolf’s name?” I asked, searching for antiviral medication in my bag.
Emma’s eyes flashed with pain. “Astrid… she barely speaks to me anymore.”
This caught my attention. The wolf is the core of a werewolf’s vitality and healing ability. If Emma’s wolf had withdrawn, it might explain why she was recovering slower than other patients.
“Emma,” I asked gently while preparing an IV medication, “when did Astrid start becoming silent?”
Ryan suddenly spoke from the corner of the room. “Since Robert passed away… about a year ago.”
I looked up at Ryan, who added, “Robert was Emma’s husband, the former Alpha.*
A clearer picture began forming in my mind. This wasn’t just physical illness but deep psychological trauma. Losing a fated mate is devastating for any werewolf–I knew this better than most.
“Emma,” I said softly, carefully injecting the antiviral medication into her vein, “your body is fighting this virus, but your wolf needs to help you. You must find a way to reconnect with Astrid.”
Tears welled in Emma’s eyes. “She doesn’t want… to live. Not since Robert left…”
I sighed deeply, fully understanding this feeling. For two years, my wolf Hati had also wanted to give up many times, only duty and obligation to my pack
kept us going.
“I know how painful losing a mate is,” I said, my voice low and sincere. “My mate Rachel died three years ago. But your wolf needs to find a reason to move forward, or these medications will have limited effect.”
Just as I was about to explain further, the door was suddenly thrown open, and Nathan Reynolds stormed in, dangerous light flashing in his eyes.
What the hell is happening here?” Nathan growled, his Alpha aura exploding in the room, causing others to instinctively back away. His gaze locked onto me and the IV setup. “You’re giving medication to my pack member on my territory without permission?”
I calmly stood straight, facing Nathan’s fury. “Emma’s condition is serious and needed immediate treatment. Julia is out, and I have medical background, so I
could-
“I don’t care what background you have!” Nathan interrupted, stepping closer. “You have no right to make decisions in my pack. Especially regarding the
former Luna!”
