Kade looked me up and down the second I opened the door, his brows pulling together. “You answered the door in pajamas? And without a wolf? What if something happened?”

I glanced down at myself. Long sleeves, full–length pants, perfectly normal. I didn’t see the issue.

What I wore had nothing to do with whether I could handle myself.

With Lyra, even if I answered in a bikini, anyone dumb enough to try something wouldn’t live to see the next sunrise.

I shrugged. “They wouldn’t get a second chance.”

He rolled his eyes like I was exaggerating, then said more seriously, “I know you’re from Blazeborn Pack. Even if you’re not favored, you can still call in guards. But without a wolf, you need to be more careful.”

I frowned, already annoyed. “Kade, you talk too much.”

I stayed focused, working through the process, when suddenly, the sound of the front door opening cut through the silence.

My hand froze for a split second, the needle nearly slipping.

Kade and I looked at each other at the same time.

“Tessa?” we both said quietly.

The scent gave her away instantly.

A second later, her voice came from the living room. “Nira? You home?”

Her footsteps moved closer, heading toward the bedroom.

That’s when it hit me. She had the passcode. And right now, Kade was completely naked on my bed.

If she walked in, there was no explaining that.

The moment the doorknob started to turn, I moved. I slipped out and pulled the door shut behind me.

“Tessa? What are you doing here?” I asked.

She looked at me, confused. “So you are home. I was calling you, thought you weren’t here.”

Then she sniffed lightly and frowned. “Why do I smell Kade around here?”

My chest tightened for a second, but I brushed it off. “You’re imagining things.”

I quickly steered her toward the living room. “I didn’t hear you knocking earlier.”

Then I asked, “Why are you here so late?”

I poured her a glass of water.

She grabbed it, took a big gulp, then slammed it down on the table, eyes already red. “Derrick, that’s why! He’s driving me insane!”

“What happened?” I asked.

“My roommate dragged me to this bar event, some themed party or whatever, and I forgot I was supposed to see a movie with him,” she said, clearly frustrated. “But he didn’t even let me explain. He just walked off. Won’t pick up, won’t text back, nothing!”
