Kade had a way of carrying himself that made everything feel like a performance, like he was always aware of his status and expected everyone else to be aware of it too. It was irritating in a way that got under my skin faster than I liked to admit. He might have been the first heir to the alpha king, but I wasn’t exactly ordinary either. I was the hidden successor of Silvermoon Pack, and despite that, I still had to live under the weight of people thinking I didn’t even have a wolf. Compared to that, his pride felt almost excessive.

Still, I didn’t want to drag this out and risk Tessa noticing anything strange, so I forced myself to dial it back.

With a faint, teasing edge in my voice, I said, “Mr. Howell, could you please just stay here for a minute?”

Kade looked at me, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly, like he found this whole thing amusing. “And if I don’t?”

The answer came before I could think better of it.

I shoved him straight back onto the bed.

He clearly hadn’t expected it, and for the first time, I saw real surprise flash across his face. Before he could recover, I had already climbed over him, pinning him down with both hands pressed firmly against his shoulders.

“If you don’t,” I said, leaning in just enough to make the threat feel real, “I’ll knock you out and shove you under the bed.”

No one had ever treated me like that.

Not the guards, not anyone in the Howell estate, not even those who thought they were close enough to speak freely around me. And yet here she was, someone everyone believed didn’t even have a wolf, acting without the slightest hesitation.

wasn’t offended. If anything, I found the way she tried to look intimidating unexpectedly endearing.

She didn’t seem to realize how close we were, or how easily the situation could be misunderstood. I had just stepped out of the shower, and the only thing I had on was a towel wrapped loosely around my waist. With her sitting over me like that, I could feel the warmth. of her body far too clearly.

I looked at her face, at the faint flush on her cheeks and the sharp light in her eyes, and something shifted in me in a way I didn’t immediately like or understand. My heartbeat picked up, and a dryness crept into my throat as the moment stretched longer than it should have.

This version of Nira felt different. Less controlled, less distant, more like someone her instead of the composed, unreadable person she usually presented.

The thought lingered longer than it should have, until Odin’s voice cut in, blunt and unyielding.

I cleared my throat, the shift in my expression subtle but immediate. “You should get off me. I need to get dressed.”

I shot him an annoyed glance and quickly pulled away, climbing off him like I hadn’t just pinned him down seconds ago.

“Don’t make a sound,” I warned before heading out.

Kade sat up behind me, and when he spoke, his voice carried an ease that only made me more irritated. “Alright.”

“Fine, I forgive you,” she said, her tone light again. “We’ll go tomorrow.”

Even from across the room, I could hear Derrick’s voice through the call, steady and warm as always. “Sounds good.”

Tessa ended the call, clearly in a better mood, and turned to me with an easy smile. “Nira, it’s late. I’m staying here tonight.”

There wasn’t any real reason to refuse, so I nodded. “Sure. You can take the master bedroom/

I sat down beside her and asked, “You and Derrick okay now?”

She took a sip of water before answering, her expression relaxed. “Yeah. He apologized.”

That didn’t surprise me. If anything, it felt like something that had probably happened more than once.

We talked for a little while longer before I excused myself and went back to my room.

When I walked in, Kade was already dressed and sitting off to the side with a book in his hands. I glanced at the cover and recognized it immediately as one of my medical texts.

A quiet sense of relief settled in.

At least it wasn’t one of the pack management books my foster father had given me. Explaining that would have been far more complicated than I was willing to deal with.

Kade closed the book and stood when he saw me. “Did she leave?”

“No,” I said, keeping my tone casual. “It’s too late, so she’s staying. Which means you’re staying too.”

I pulled an extra blanket out of the closet and handed it to him, then gestured toward the floor. “You can sleep here. The other room’s hers.”

Given who he was, I expected at least some resistance.

There was none.

He took the blanket without a word and began setting up a place for himself on the floor, as if it didn’t bother him in the slightest.

Before long, the lights were off, and the room settled into quiet.
