The woman I nearly lost Lyra for, when I risked everything to save her. The one I gave up my place as heir to the Silvermoon Pack for–just to earn her love. To come back here. To be her daughter.
But she never once saw me as her own.
“You” She stepped forward again, but suddenly stopped, her expression shifting to smug pride as she looked ahead.
I followed her gaze. Janice stood in the distance, nestled up close to Colt. And then I understood why Lyra had been agitated inside me this whole time.
I turned back to Jenna, who was now beaming at me like she’d won.
“Janice is pureblood, raised by me to be everything a Luna should be smart, graceful, and born to lead. Once she’s part of the Howell family, she’ll make sure to bring you along too. Can’t let you get left behind, right?”
What a fantasy. I let out a harsh breath, unimpressed.
As long as I was alive, I’d never let that plan work.
The two in the distance must’ve heard us. They quickly pulled apart.
Janice smoothed her dress and hair before turning toward us. When she saw it was just me and Jenna, she looked visibly relieved.
“Hey, Mom, Nira–out here catching a breather too?” Her cheeks were flushed, lipstick a mess, not that she had a clue.
The second Jenna saw her, her entire demeanor changed. That nasty scowl melted into maternal sweetness.
“Janice, sweetheart, where’s your coat? You’ll catch cold like this.” She hurried over and clutched Janice’s hands like she was holding a treasure.
“Look at you, your lipstick’s a mess. Go fix it, silly girl.”
Janice reached up reflexively, touching her lips. Her cheeks turned red as she dipped her head,
embarrassed.
“Mom.”

Jenna laughed, clearly enjoying herself. “Well, you’re actually blushing!”
I rolled my eyes, done watching this fake little performance.
