“There’s only one Miss Soren worth mentioning, and that’s Janice,” Jenna snapped, jumping to her feet. “This isn’t happening. I’m going to the Howell estate myself.”
“Kade is awake now. Who cares about Colt?”
“Sit down.” Damon growled, his voice thick with Alpha power. “You think you can just show up at their estate like it’s a casual visit? In front of the Howells, we don’t get a say.”
“But we can’t let that wolfless failure marry into their family!” Jenna paced, furious. “What is Kade even thinking? How could he possibly choose her?”
Janice had been quiet all this time, but now she cast me a cold look before gently tugging Jenna’s sleeve.
“Mom, don’t worry. I’m sure Nira will support the Sorens and the Blazeborn Pack, just like I would have, even if she becomes his mate.”
“Hmph. She’d be more likely to turn on us.” Jenna scoffed.
Damon’s face was dark with thought, his eyes narrowed in calculation.
Janice saw the shift. She glanced my way, lips twitching into a smug little smile. I knew exactly what she was doing.
Damon was all about profit. If he thought this bonding might hurt his standing or threaten his control, he’d do whatever it took to sabotage it–or at least twist it in his favor.
“Don’t get too proud just yet, Nira,” Aven suddenly said.
I looked at him, blinking innocently. Proud? Hardly. I was just enjoying the pathetic scrambling in front of me.
“This bond? It’s just a temporary move from the Howells.”
“What do you mean?” Jenna perked up immediately.
Damon turned to Aven too, eyes narrowing. “You think they’re stalling? Waiting for a better option?”
Aven nodded slightly. “Kade was dying. The healer they brought in said his wolf could only be

moment.”
“You think the Howells actually wanted her?” His eyes flicked toward me in disgust.
Everyone turned to stare at me again, and I saw it–the way their eyes relaxed. Like they’d figured out it was all a fluke.
Damon gave a slow nod. Aven’s theory made too much sense to ignore.
“Even if the bond falls through, the Howells will owe us something,” he muttered, his tone
smug.
I’d had enough. I turned on my heel and walked out of the Soren estate.
A black SUV pulled up as I reached the edge of the grounds. Vera stepped out, opened the door, and gave me a respectful nod.
Not long after, the car stopped at a quiet cemetery. I stepped out with a bouquet of soft white daisies in my hands, walking toward a single headstone. The inscription read: In Loving Memory of Mina Smith. Gone Too Soon, Forever in Our Hearts.
I lowered myself beside the grave and carefully laid the flowers down.
“You don’t have to worry, Mina. I’ll make sure they pay.”
Five years ago, when I returned to the Sorens with a shattered wolf, Mina had just started as an Omega maid.
She’d been assigned to me–and suffered right alongside me. Every cold stare, every whisper.
