Chapter 196 Hotel Suite
Nira’s POV:

Kade stopped in his tracks, turning to face me with a look of genuine concern knitting his brow. “What is it? Is something wrong?”
I wanted to ask him why he went to such lengths for me why he treated me with a tenderness I hadn’t earned—but the words died on my tongue. Instead, I just gave a small shake of my head “Nothing. Just… thank you. For everything.”
Kade held my gaze, his expression softening considerably. “Don’t mention it. seriously. Go get some rest. I’ll come by later to take you to dinner.”
I nodded, watching as the door clicked shut behind him.
My eyes drifted to the suitcase sitting in the corner of the room. The team leader had stowed it on the bus with the rest of the gear earlier, so Kade must have sent someone up to retrieve it for me ahead of time. I wasn’t oblivious to the way he treated me differently from everyone else.
My life had never exactly been a fairy tale. Growing up with my adoptive father in the isolated Silvermoon Pack, my days were a grueling cycle of hand–to–hand combat training and studying pack logistics. It was a sterile, cold existence. After I discovered the truth about my lineage and fled to the Blazeborn Pack to find my biological family, the Sorens, they hadn’t rolled out the welcome mat. Instead, they’d banded together and tossed me into a prison cell like a common criminal.
You could say that “love” or “affection” were concepts that simply didn’t exist in my world. Before Lyra, my wolf, woke up, I had never even allowed myself to hope for a fated mate. I didn’t have the first clue what it felt like to genuinely care for someone romantically.
So, when I first noticed Kade treating me with that extra layer of attention, I panicked and called off the engagement. But Kade had agreed so instantly, without a second of hesitation, that I convinced myself I was just reading too much into it.
Maybe the special treatment was “asset” or his mentee.

presidential suite. Maybe this was just X9 looking out for a rookie?
I lay back on the bed, lacing my fingers behind my head, but my mind betrayed me. The image of Kade leaning over me to buckle the seatbelt flashed in my mind, vivid and intrusive.
He had been so close. Close enough that I could trace the sharp bridge of his nose, see the way his thin lips pressed into a firm line, and get lost in the depths of those eyes that always seemed to hide a storm of emotions i couldn’t quite read.
His breath had ghosted over my ear, carrying that crisp, clean scent–like chilled pine and mint. Even now, just the memory of it made my heart hammer against my ribs and sent a flush of heat racing to my ears.
I rolled over and buried my face in the plush pillow, trying to physically force myself to calm down. But the harder i tried to block out, the clearer the memory became.
I could practically feel the brushing of his fingers, long and deft, as he pulled the seatbelt across me. The gesture had been so gentle, so natural, as if he did it every day.
For some reason, a flash of annoyance cut through my infatuation. I huffed and flipped onto my back, smacking myself in the forehead with the palm of my hand. Get it together, Nira.

The next day, the regional qualifiers officially kicked off.
The venue was electric. The buzz of hundreds of voices bounced off the walls as players from every team warmed up, the air thick with tension and adrenaline.
My teammates from the Shadowgrid Squad and I arrived early to run a final diagnostic on our gear and go over our strategy one last time.
Kade had claimed a seat in the front row of the audience section. Even without looking, I could feel the heat of his gaze burning into me. It was unsettling, so I made a point of keeping my eyes strictly forward.
I was dressed in the standard team uniform–functional athletic gear–with my hair pulled back into a high, tight ponytail. I looked clean, sharp, and ready for business.
Thanks to my heightened werewolf hearing, I couldn’t help but pick up on the murmurs rippling through the crowd.
“Hey, who’s the girl on the Shadowgrid Squad? She doesn’t even have a distinct wolf scent. Is she a human?” a guy whispered nearby.
“She doesn’t smell weak to me,” a girl next to him chimed in excitedly. “That’s Nira Soren. She’s a new recruit this year. Supposedly a freshman at Howard Academy, too.”
“No way? She’s actually a student here?”
“A freshman making the Shadowgrid Squad? She must be something/special to bypass the usual rank requirements.”
I tuned out the chatter, focusing entirely on checking my weapon/The gossip didn’t matter. Performance was everything.

Kade’s POV:
Hearing the crowd sing Nira’s praises, I felt a smug smile tugging at the corner of my mouth. My pride in her was immense.
When the referee signaled the start, both teams wasted no time engaging.
were fluid, almost As the core of her squad, Nira shouldered the heaviest burden for both offense and defense. Her movements liquid, and her tactical processing was lightning–fast. She had a knack for pinpointing the opposing team’s weak links and exploiting them before they even realized they were exposed.
The opposing team was formidable, though. Their discipline was tight, and their strategies were solid. The score seesawed back and forth, neither side willing to give an inch.
In the first round, Shadowgrid Squad seized the victory thanks to Nira’s sharp judgment and seamless coordination with her
teammates.
But the enemy didn’t crumble. Instead, they adapted. They shifted their tactics in the second round, capitalizing on a brief lapse in Shadowgrid Squad’s focus to tie the game up at 1-1. The tension in the arena spiked.
The third round was the decider–the sudden death round. Both teams threw caution to the wind. The opposition launched vicious, all–out assault right at the buzzer, catching Shadowgrid off guard and forcing them onto their back foot.
