I stood at the top of the steps outside Howard High School, My gaze swept coldry across the teenagers running around below.
The basketball court was overflowing with youthful energy. Sneakers squeaked against the floor. Basketballs slammed against backboards. Laughter, cheers, and excited shouts filled the air. The whole place was alive
But one boy stood out more than anyone else.
Even from a distance, Odin caught a familiar scent on him.
A scent I knew all too well. It belonged to Mom. There was no mistaking it.
The boy wore a white basketball jersey. A black headband wrapped around his forehead. Sweat ran down his face, but it didn’t affect his performance in the slightest.
He moved across the court with smooth dribbles, explosive drives, and precise shots. Every time he scored, the girls on the idelines erupted into cheers.
Confidence shone on his face, while his eyes burned with an unshakable desire to win.
His teammates constantly gathered around him, exchanging high–fives, laughter, and words of encouragement. Everything about
im radiated happiness.
watched silently. My emotions were a tangled mess.
Clear eyes and a bright smile made him look effortlessly approachable. He looked exactly like a child who had grown up urrounded by love.
The principal stood beside me. His voice was respectful. “Mr. Howell, that’s Andrew Hale. He’s the captain of our basketball team. Excellent grades. Outgoing personality. Very popular with the students.”
gave a slight nod and nothing more.
My eyes never left Andrew. But my heart felt colder with every passing second.”
After the game ended, Andrew wiped the sweat from his face and said goodbye to his teammates.
At my signal, the principal called him over. “Andrew, come here for a moment.”
Holding a basketball under one arm, Andrew jogged over.
The moment he saw me standing beside the principal, surprise flashed across his face, quickly followed by excitement and
admiration.
The principal stepped forward with a smile. “Andrew, let me introduce you This is Kade Howell. The First Alpha King Heir of the Pack Alliance. The basketball court you’re playing on was donated by Mr. Howell. He came today to see your team’s performance.”
Andrew’s eyes lit up immediately. “Mr. Howell!” His voice was full of excitement. “I’ve seen you on the news! You’re a role model for all of us. I’ve always admired you!”

Hooked at hirn coldly without responding.
He was vibrant and full of life, his smile innocent and untouched by hardship.
Mom had protected him far too well. The thought made me sick.
For some reason, I found that carefree smile unbearable.

Andrew scratched the back of his head awkwardly. Apparently, not noticing my indifference. “So…” He smiled. “Did the principal need something from me?”
The principal glanced at me before answering. “Mr. Howell wants to learn more about the basketball team. Come to the conference ‘oom and give us a brief report.”
‘Sure!” Andrew agreed immediately.
A few minutes later, the principal led us into a quiet meeting room.
The moment I entered, I sat down on the sofa. Then I glanced at Jett.
He immediately understood. Stepping forward with a friendly smile, he began asking questions. “Jett, Mr. Howell is very interested
n your team. We’d also like to learn a little about the players. I heard you come from a single–parent household?”
Andrew froze briefly, then nodded openly. “Yeah, I grew up with my mom. I don’t have a dad. But that’s okay.” A warm smile appeared on his face. “My mom loves me very much. And I love her too. We’re really happy.”
There wasn’t a trace of resentment, self–pity, or bitterness in his voice–only gratitude and love.
A strange feeling stirred inside me.
lett continued, “What rank is your mom? What kind of work does she do? Raising a child alone couldn’t have been easy.”
Andrew laughed softly. “My mom’s just an ordinary werewolf. She mostly does freelance graphic design from home. We’re not rich or anything. But she always gives me the best she can.” His eyes softened. “She always says that as long as I grow up healthy and happy, she’ll be satisfied.”
The room fell quiet. For some reason, the anger inside me weakened slightly.
lowered my gaze, looking at the DNA report in my hand. My fingers tightened around it. But I couldn t bring myself to take it out
Andrew glanced between us. Confusion appeared on his face. When Jett stopped asking questions, he looked toward me. Howell, would you like me to tell you about the other team members too-”
“No,” I cut him off coldly.
The smile on his face faltered. I stood up immediately. Then walked straight out of the conference room
Inside the car, I made a sharp gesture toward the front seat. Jett immediately started the engine
The vehicie pulled away from the school. The scenery outside the window blurred past, carrying me farther away from the school and the boy with the clear eyes and innocent smile. Only then did I feel slightly better.
