Kade froze slightly. His gaze darkened. “Would she?” The words escaped in a low murmur.

“So what?” Tessa hadn’t heard him. She’d been too busy watching Olivia and Derrick on the dance floor.

Kade lowered his eyes. “It’s nothing.” Then he looked back at her. “I remember your Advanced Werewolf Combat Assessment is coming up soon.” His tone returned to normal. “So why do you still have time to attend banquets?”

Tessa wrinkled her nose, then proudly puffed out her chest. “I’m here to protect you for Nira.” She pointed dramatically around t ballroom. “Who knows how many man–eating demons are hiding here?”

Then she made an exaggerated monster–eating gesture, looking playful, mischievous, and completely ridiculous.

Yet hearing Nira’s name again made Kade’s grip tighten around his glass. The wine inside rippled slightly. Without another word. he turned and walked away. He found a quiet corner and sat there alone, lost in thought.

Most people know better than to bring up Nira around me. Tessa is one of the few who still does.

Throughout the entire event, Tessa had practically guarded him like a bodyguard. Unfortunately, near the end of the banquet, someone came looking for her. Since Kade was already speaking on stage, she left with them for a moment.

The instant Tessa disappeared, Olivia smiled.
