Chapter 23 Echoes in the Music

The moment I lifted the bow and ended the last note, the crowd finally snapped out of the illusion. Everyone looked around in shock, their faces pale as they took in the mess around them.

Colt was still half–shifted, his claws extended, frozen in a pose mid–attack. He must’ve realized what he just shouted, because his face twisted with panic.

“You bitch! What the hell did you do to us?” Rhett’s voice cracked as he pointed at me, visibly shaking.

A wave of growls rippled through the crowd, every set of wolf eyes locked on me.

I shrugged, innocent as ever. “I just played a piece of music. What could I have possibly done?”

Then I tilted my head, playing up the mystery.

“The person who taught me this piece said it was harmless for most listeners. But for someone with a… darker conscience? It tends to bring out the worst. Drives them a little mad, actually.”

I turned to Rhett, eyebrows raised. “So? What exactly did you see?”

Of course, he wasn’t about to admit to anything twisted. His voice went loud and defensive. “Nothing! I didn’t see anything!”

Then, his tone softened, scrambling to save face. “It just… felt a little too real, that’s all.”

“Yes, yes, Miss Soren’s playing is truly remarkable,” others chimed in, falling over themselves with compliments. “Felt like we were really there.”

I watched them with an amused smile. They weren’t praising me, they were terrified.

But I didn’t bother calling them out. I just said casually, “You flatter me. Really, it was something I picked up for fun.”

From across the room, Janice stood silent, her expression darkening with every compliment thrown my way.

Her gaze sharpened as she stared at me, wolf eyes flickering like she might shift on the spot and tear my throat out.

The next moment, she forced a smile and walked up to me, voice honeyed with fake sincerity. “Nira, I had no idea you played so well. Were you afraid I’d compare myself to you?”

I blinked at her with mock innocence.

“Funny. We’ve lived in the same house for years, but somehow you never noticed. Guess that says more about you than me.”

“I…” she stammered, clearly thrown off, then glared at me before she could stop herself.

“Enough!” Damon barked the word, stepping forward to scold me.

“Nira, how could you be so out of line?”

“This was supposed to be a birthday celebration for you and Janice. How could you play something that caused this much chaos? Just look at this place!”

I lifted my chin, staring him down. “I didn’t plan to play anything. It was your precious daughter, Janice, who insisted.”
