“Congratulations on the winery opening, Kade,” Olivia said, her voice soft and sweet, completely ignoring the tension in the Kade’s expression didn’t change. “Thanks,” he replied coldly.

Olivia brushed off his icy reception and turned her attention to Damian instead. But Damian was entirely focused on Nira and hadn’t spared her a single glance.

Looking back and forth between Nira and Damian, Olivia smiled and stepped forward, her voice dripping with implication. “You really are popular, Nira. Even someone as cold–hearted as Damian is looking after you so carefully.”

Her comment made everyone in the room frown.

Stung by his blunt dismissal, Olivia’s expression soured. She managed to force a tight smile, her voice tinged with awkwardness. “Damian, it was just a joke. Don’t take it personally.”

Damian gave her a chilling look, his tone remaining flat. “We aren’t on joking terms.”

Tessa, who couldn’t stand Olivia, pulled Nira away to tour the winery. Later, after stepping out of the restroom, Tessa couldn’t find Nira anywhere, but she ran into Zane, who was wandering around on his own.

“Zane? Why are you by yourself?”

Zane scoffed. “Briar got called back in for another surgery.”

Tessa nodded understandingly, then seized the opportunity. “Zane, you’ve known Kade for ages. You must know a lot about him, right?”

Zane shot her a wary look, instantly on guard. “What are you up to now?”

Tessa grabbed his arm, putting on a playful, pleading act. “Oh, come on, I’m not up to anything! I just want to know if the rumors are true. Did Kade really propose to Olivia?”

“Proposal? No way,” Zane said, glaring at her. “Stop listening to that nonsense.”

Tessa beamed instantly. “So it is fake! That means Olivia has just been making things up and living in a fantasy world.”

“Well, it’s not entirely made up. Back then, Kade actually did say he would choose Olivia as his mate…” Zane scratched his head, looking troubled. “But it’s complicated. I can’t explain it in just a few words. Just make sure you don’t tell Nira.”

“What? So it is true?” Tessa wrinkled her nose in distaste. “And you think Nira won’t find out just because I don’t tell her?”

The more Tessa thought about it, the angrier she got. “If Kade is still tangled up with Olivia, why is he leading Nira on? He’s a total jerk. I am not letting him anywhere near Nira.”

With that, she stormed off in a rage.

“Hey, wait up! You don’t even have the whole story, don’t do anything reckless!” Zane shouted, chasing after her.

After they both left, I stepped out from behind the tee.

I hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but I never expected to overhear something like that.

An unexpected pang of bitterness tightened in my chest, but I managed to steady myself quickly. It looked like the path between Kade and me was going to be far more complicated than had ever imagined.

Olivia’s POV

I had been wandering around for ages without catching a glimpse of Kade, and irritation was starting to set in. But just as I was about to give up and leave, I spotted Damian, who seemed to be out looking for someone, too.

Remembering the devoted way he had been staring at Nira earlier, a brilliant idea flashed through my mind. I couldn’t fathom why someone like him would ever be interested in a wolf–less reject like Nira, but that didn’t mean i couldn’t use his infatuation to my advantage.

I quickened my pace to catch up with him and offered a perfectly poised smile. “Damian, what a coincidence. I didn’t expect to run into you here.”

Damian gave me a brief, distant look. “Olivia. Is there something you need?”

I smiled subtly, letting my voice carry a hint of hidden meaning. “I can’t help but notice how deeply you care about Nira.”

A flash of wariness crossed his eyes, and his voice turned cold. “That is my personal business, Olivia. You don’t need to concern yourself with it.”
