Nira’s POV

“Otherwise what?” Kade asked, his eyes narrowing dangerously.

I leaned close to his ear, whispering with a smirk, “Otherwise, I’ll break both your legs, rip out your wolf soul, and lock you away at my place forever.”

Kade chuckled, giving my waist a punishing little squeeze. “Ruthless woman.” He dipped his head to brush a soft kiss against my lips. “You wouldn’t even need to force me. I’d go willingly.”

Before the words could fully leave his mouth, he claimed my lips again. This time, the kiss was even more intense, carrying an undeniable command, yet beneath the bruising pressure was a deep, lingering tenderness that made me feel incredibly cherished. My breath hitched, and my fingers mindlessly bunched the fabric of his lapels.

Kade took advantage of my parted lips to deepen the kiss, parting my teeth with his tongue. The intoxicating scent of him hit Lyra like a wave, sending a sudden, overwhelming urge to mate flooding through her. Losing my own control, I melted into him completely.

By the time we finally broke apart, our breath mingled in the space between us, thick and heavy with reluctance. Kade stared at my swollen, flushed lips, his dark eyes burning. “That’s the exact taste…” he murmured, his voice rough.

“What?” I asked, dazed.

Kade leaned down for one more quick peck. “Nothing. I’ve already got people keeping an eye on the Children’s Hospital. When the day comes, you just focus on treating the patients.”

Resting against his arm, I tilted my head to look up at him, a sly smile returning to my face. “Are you offering to be my bodyguard, Kade?”

He ran his long fingers through the stray hairs framing my face, his voice dropping an octave. “No. I’m going to be your shadow,” The warmth of his hand seeped through my hair. “From now on, wherever you go, I follow.”

I burst out laughing, poking a finger into his solid chest. “The soon–to–be Alpha King wants to be my sidekick?”

“Why not?” Kade caught my hand to stop my teasing, locking his fingers with mine and pressing our joined hands against his heart.

Knock, knock.

At the sound of the door, I naturally stepped out of Kade’s embrace. “Come in.”

My secretary, Harper, walked in. She caught sight of us and blinked in surprise, her gaze darting from me to Kade. Catching herself, she quickly lowered her eyes and offered a respectful bow. “Nira, the testing reports for the sixth–generation equipment are ready.”

“Thank you, Harper. You can leave it with me,” I said, keeping my voice perfectly composed as I took the folder. Shielded from Kade’s view, my thumb discreetly wiped the corner of my mouth. “That will be all.”

The moment the door clicked shut behind Harper, Kade’s arms wrapped around me from behind. He rested his chin on my shoulder, a low laugh vibrating against my back. “Your lipstick isn’t exactly smudge–proof, Nira.” He pointed toward his reflection in the glass overlay of the report. “Look, it’s all over me.”

With my ears burning, I threw a sharp elbow backward into his ribs. “You should clean yourself up, Alpha,” I said, forcing a stern
