Kade tørt but a low groan, his arms fighterling around me so suddenly that it almost hurt. He looked down at me, a dangerous glint flashing in his eyes as he rasped, “You’re playing th fire
immediately held up my hands in surrender, giving him a playful, sweet smile. “Alright, alright. I’ll stop.”
Kade slowly loosened his grip, a flicker of disappointment crossing his face as he murmured in a low, husky voice, “I actually wouldn’t mind if you kept pushing my buttons”
Laughing, I slipped out of his embrate. Wrapping his jacket tighter around myself, I walked over to the sofa and cutied up with my legs crossed
Kade had the maids clean up the shattered glass from the rug, then went to fetch a glass of water himself.
“Janice’s background wouldn’t hold up under any real scrutiny, and whoever is backing her must know that,” Kade analyzed, handing me the water. He sat down across from me, crossing his long legs as his sharp, analytical mindset completely replaced the romantic tension from moments before. “Yet they still sent her back here anyway. There’s definitely more to this.”
“It’s highly suspicious,” I agreed, taking a sip from the glass. “Even with my network, I couldn’t find a single trace of where she’s been for the past three years. Now, out of nowhere, she makes this massive, public return…”
The last few drops of rain tapped against the windowpane, a dull rhythm that matched the heavy mood weighing on my chest.
Clutching my water glass, I looked directly at Kade, my voice steady,/I suspect she was brought back intentionally–as a pawn.” I took a sip. “Just like that endgame on your study’s chessboard. Sometimes, the sacrificed piece is the deadliest move.”
Kade suddenly leaned forward and took my hand, his expression turning intensely serious. “I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
His voice was low and unwavering, his thumb gently brushing across the back of my hand. Looking into his deep eyes, I could see a tempest of protective instinct and lingering affection that made my heart skip a beat.
“I know,” I murmured, my fingertips tracing a soft line across his palm. “Besides, I’m not entirely defenseless.”
In reality, my wolf spirit, Lyra, was just as powerful as his. But I couldn’t confess that to him just yet. I couldn’t help but feel a wave of anxiety and helplessness, wondering if he would be angry with me when I finally revealed my true identity.
Kade’s eyes suddenly darkened, lost in thought, and his grip around my wrist tightened instinctively.
“If you hadn’t tried to save me back then, you wouldn’t have been poisoned. Your health wouldn’t be…” He choked up, his thumb gently tracing the faint, nearly invisible needle mark on the inside of my wrist. “This is where you drew the poison out of me. It’s a permanent reminder of a sin I can never forgive myself for,” he said, his voice laced with grief.
Feeling his fingers tremble, I tried to soothe him. “You were facing certain death, Kade. My body and blood have natural detoxifying properties, so it was the logical choice. Look at us now–we’re both perfectly fine.”
Before I could finish, Kade dropped to one knee and pulled me into his arms, blanket and all. He buried his face in the crook of my neck, his breath hot and heavy against my skin. “But it still left you so frail.”
Hating how suffocating the atmosphere had become, I immediately forced his head up and arched an eyebrow. “So, you only like me because i saved your life?”

Course not! Kade protested, shaking his head frantically “I fell for you long before that night…
Seeing how flustered he was, I lashed a mischievous smile. “But we only met because I cured you. How can you be so sure your feelings aren’t just gratitude?”
Kade slammed his hands onto the armrests of the sofa, pinning me beneath him. His eyes were slightly toadshot with urgency. “Listen to me, Nira-”
“The very first time I saw you, you were straddling me and threatening me with a weapon,” he said, his voice low and rushed. “All! could think was, how does this little girl–who doesn’t even have a wolf spirit–dare to disrespect me like this?”
I bit my lip to keep from laughing.
“You love steak but hate cutting it. Whenever you’re thinking hard, you always need to hold something in your hands…” Kade’s fingertips lightly traced the curve of my brows and eyes. “Do you really think I’d fotice details like that out of mere gratitude?”
His voice dropped to a near–whisper, dissolving into a sigh. “Nira, I love every single one of your imperfections. I love how stubborn you are. I love…”
He paused, suddenly catching on to my game. His eyes narrowed dangerously as he feigned anger. “You did that on purpose.”
I finally burst out laughing. “I heard you. You love me a lot.”
Kade’s gaze darkened. He lunged forward and bit my lower lip–just hard enough to make me gasp, but not enough to hurt.

Hey! We’re using this spot. If you know what’s good for you, get out of the way!” A silver–haired young man yelled as he stepped out of his sports car, his aun slung around a girlcaked in heavy makeup. His attitude dripped with arrogance.
Inside me, Lyra instantly went on

Kade’s eyes turned ice–cold. Pressing me firmly against his chest, he barked a single word at them, “Get lost!”
The silver–haired guy clearly lacked the sensory strength to recognize Kade as an elite werewolf. He just sneered, spinning his car keys around his finger as he continued his blatant provocation. “Do you even know who I am? I’m Elias. My father is Kael Varric, the Alpha of the Grimclaw Pack!”
I could feel the air pressure plummeting around Kade.
He slipped his phone back into his pocket with deliberate slowness, his voice freezing over. “Never heard of him.”
“Why you-!” Elias’s eyes instantly flashed with his wolf’s fury.
Then his gaze drifted over to Kade’s sports car parked nearby, and his eyes gleamed with an idea. “Tell you what. Let’s race. Winner gets the spot.”
A dangerous smirk played on Kade’s lips. “Stakes are too low. Not interested.”
“Then what do you want?”
Kade’s smile turned lethal. “The loser crawls down this mountain on all fours, by hand, without relying on any inner wolf
Elias’s companion, Lena, suddenly leaned in and whispered something into his ear.
Elias’s eyes lit up, and he gritted his teeth. “Fine! You’re on!”

Soon, the two sports cars were lined up side–by–side at the starting line of the winding mountain road. I buckled my seatbelt tightly and turned to Kade. “You know how to race?”
Kade kept one hand on the steering wheel while using the other to gently squeeze my fingers. “Zane dragged me out to play a few times back in the day.”
