Tessa rushed over to see me the moment she watched my press conference, practically vibrating with anxiety.

“Nira, why on earth did you agree to treat those patients? What if it’s a trap?

Instead of answering right away, I pulled her down onto the sofa next to me and tried to calra her down. “I know you’re worried, but take a deep breath.”

“How can I not worry?” Tessa’s agitation was so intense that one of her wolf ears poked straight up through her hair. “There’s clearly something wrong with those patients! What if something happens to them while you’re treating them…

I knew she was just looking out for me, so I kept my voice calm and measured. “With public opinion reaching a fever pitch like this, I couldn’t just hide from it. I had to agree.”

Tessa gnashed her teeth in frustration. “And those families are unbelievable! Dr. Beyond is the one who hurt their relatives–if they have any backbone, they should go after her. But the moment something goes wrong, they come to guilt–trip you. What a bunch of cowards.”

I kept quiet about my other reason for stepping in. Noah had approached me privately, asking if I could help the police track down the hostile foreign network while treating the seventeen patients. After analyzing the breadcrumbs from everything that had happened since I left the Silvermoon Pack, I realized these incidents were highly likely connected to mutant werewolves–and by extension, to my biological parents. That was the real reason I chose to play along.

Kade took a fruit platter from Julie and walked over, sitting down right beside me. He glanced at Tessa. “Nira knows what she’s doing. Stop making such a scene.”

That pushed Tessa over the edge. In her heat of the moment, she completely forgot who she was talking to and snapped right back at him. “At least I’m actually doing something by calling them out! All you did was throw money at a useless bounty, Kade, and you haven’t even found her yet. Talk about incompetent!”

My heart leaped into my throat.

Whatever else he was to us, Kade was still the soon–to–be Alpha King. Hearing Tessa speak to him with such blatant disrespect made me genuinely terrified that he might lose his temper, shift into his wolf form, and rip her throat out.

Kade seemed completely caught off guard that Tessa would go so far as to yell at him just to defend me. He froze, speechless.

A small smile tugged at my lips, but to save the silly girl from digging her grave any deeper, I quickly intervened. “Alright, I know you’re just looking out for me and worried about Dr. Beyond setting a trap, but there’s no need to panic just yet.”

I gently nudged Tessa back into her seat. “If this really is a trap, it’s even more reason for me to treat those seventeen people, I can’t just stand by and let this neurotoxin threaten ordinary, defenseless werewolves.”

Tessa finally started to calm down a bit. “I’m just scared for you. It feels like it’s been one crisis after another these past few years. You never get a moment of peace…”

After soothing Tessa, I looked up at Kade. When I saw his expression remained relaxed, showing no intention of holding a grudge against her, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.

I offered a cold, slight smile. “The Elas fellow made a bet with us. The loser has to cawl all the way down the mountain on all fours. Unfortunately, it seems… he isn’t a man of his word.”

Terrified, Cassian shot a nervous glance at Kade before whirling around to kick Elias hard. “Are you out of your griddamn mind? You dare mess with Kade and Nira?”

Elias curled into a ball on the ground, too terrified to make a sound.

Adjusting his cuffs, Kade spoke with cool indifference. “Cassian, I’ll leave him to you. Just remember to follow pack laws. Don’t go killing anyone.”

“Yes, sir! Absolutely, Alpha! You can count on me!” Cassian bowed and scraped eagerly.

Just as Kade was about to take me home, a girl suddenly burst out from the crowd and ran up to me. “Nira, I don’t want to stay here. Can I please come with you?”

She looked to be about sixteen or seventeen, her delicate face tight with anxiety. Her scent marked her as a low–ranking Omega, entirely out of place in a setting like this.

I looked up and caught Kade’s eye.

“What is going on here?” His sharp gaze swept over the girl before he whipped around to confront Cassian. “Did you do this?”

“She’s not with me!” Cassian answered, trembling. He reached into the crowd, grabbed a light–blonde young man by the collar, and hauled him forward. “Talk! Did you bring her here?”

The guy stammered, “Cassian, we just… we just brought her along for some fun. We didn’t mean anything by it…”

Kade’s expression darkened. He pointed a long finger at Cassian, his voice icy. “Explain it to your uncle Briar yourself.”

Cassian turned deathly pale. Before he could utter another word, Kade turned away and pulled open the car door for me.

The girl in white followed us obediently into the sports car, sitting quietly in the back seat.
