Lorraine gripped the collar of her protective suit so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
“Miss Soren, are you sure… absolutely sure… that we’re not going to get infected doing this?” Her voice shook despite her effort to stay composed.
A young nurse from the lab suddenly broke down in tears.
“Are we all going to die?”
Across the table, the head of anesthesiology abruptly pushed back his chair and stood.
“I want a transfer.” His voice caught. “My daughter is only three years old…”
The conference room fell into a tense silence, heavy with fear.
I stood quietly for a moment before adjusting the projector. The enlarged microscopic image of the blood sample illuminated the wall with an eerie blue glow.
Taking a slow breath, I pointed to the screen.
“Everyone, look closely. These nanoscale viral particles have a unique protein structure on their surface.”
My fingers trembled slightly, but I forced myself to remain calm.
“They disguise themselves as neurotransmitters, which allows them to remain dormant for up to twenty–one days. But that’s not the most dangerous part.”
I switched the display to a simulation model.
“Once activated, they can spread through sweat, saliva, and even normal breathing. Based on our calculations, they’re approximately 3.7 times more contagious than a conventional lethal virus.”
The room went completely still.
Conrad’s pen slipped from his hand and struck the floor with a sharp click that echoed through the silence.
“If…”

My voice faltered unexpectedly.
:
The grief I’d been holding back threatened to overwhelm me.
I dug my fingernail into my palm and used the pain to steady myself.

“If this virus ever leaves the hospital, then within seventy–two hours–just seventy–two hours- every pack across Veralle, every family, every…”
The words died in my throat. The outcome was too devastating to describe, and judging by the expressions around the room, I didn’t need to. Everyone already understood exactly where that scenario would lead.
I reached over and switched off the projector. For a brief moment, darkness settled over the conference room.
When I spoke again, I decided there was no point hiding the truth.
“To be honest, I don’t have the answers. I still don’t fully understand this virus, and right now I have no breakthrough to offer. But we can’t give up.”
I looked at each person in the room.
“Because if we do, then those patients really won’t have any hope left.”
No one looked away.
“Right now, I need your help.”
I walked over to the map hanging on the wall and pointed toward the territories spread across Veralle.
“This stopped being about seventeen patients a long time ago. We’re talking about eight million lives across this continent. We’re talking about every pack, and possibly the future of our entire species.”
A chair scraped against the floor.
Lorraine stood.
The material of her protective suit rustled softly as she straightened her shoulders.
“Miss Soren, my granddaughter just started preschool.”
Her voice trembled.

“But thirty years ago, when I entered this profession, I swore that I’d dedicate my life to protecting the health and lives of others.”
She placed a shaking hand over her heart.
Her wolf eyes shone with unwavering determination.
“I’m not young anymore,” she said quietly, “but I’ll fight this virus with everything I’ve got.”
“My mate’s birthday is next week.”
Conrad suddenly picked up the treatment proposal from the table.
“If she found out I ran from something like this…”
A strained smile appeared on his face.
“I’d never hear the end of it, and I’d never be able to face myself.”
A few nervous chuckles broke through the tension.
In the corner, a young Omega nurse was still wiping tears from her cheeks, but she slowly raised her hand anyway.
“M–My parents were saved by healthcare workers when I was little…”
Her voice shook.
“If people hadn’t stayed and fought for them, I wouldn’t be here today.”
That was enough.
I could no longer hold back the tears burning behind my eyes.
As I looked around the room, I saw ordinary people standing before me. Some were still crying. Some couldn’t stop their knees from trembling. Every one of them was afraid. Yet one after another, they rose to their feet and chose to stay.
The sight hit me harder than anything else that day.
“Good.”
eep breath. My voice still trembled slightly,
do this together, and we’ll fight this thing all the way to the end.”

Turning toward the whiteboard, I wrote two large words across the top.
BATTLE PLAN

“Step One: Continuous monitoring for the next seventy–two hours. Step Two: Collect viral samples every two hours. Step Three…”
The marker suddenly snapped.
I looked at the ink smeared across my fingers and laughed.
“Looks like even the marker knows we’re in for a tough fight.”
That earned a few genuine smiles.
“My preliminary treatment plan is to use low–temperature plasma exchange to remove free toxins from the bloodstream, then follow it with targeted medication to block viral replication.”
I paused.
“This phase will require someone to take charge of-”
“I’ll do it.” The head of anesthesiology spoke before I could finish.
Only minutes earlier, he had been asking for a transfer. Now he quietly slipped a family photo back into his pocket.
“My daughter… She’s going to be proud of her dad.”
I nodded. “All right. You’re taking point on that stage.”
Finally, I looked out the window. The sky had darkened completely.
A long breath escaped me.
“There’s one more thing. I need all of you to write letters to your families. We begin treatment
ours.”
