Chapter 276 A Dangerous Favor
“But Nira Aven started.

Before he could finish, Janice rose onto her toes and leaned close enough for her lips to brush the edge of his car
“Aven, you’ve always cared about me more than anyone.
Her breath warmed his skin as her fingers smoothed the wrinkles from his tic.
“Every time somebody hurt me, you were the one who protected me.”
His body went rigid.
The feelings he had buried for years surged violently to the surface.
He remembered being twenty years old. He remembered accidentally seeing Janice while she was bathing. He remembered the overwhelming mating instinct that had crashed over him and the panic that followed. Terrified by his own loss of control, he had shifted into his wolf form and fled through the window, then spent three full days hiding at a friend’s house because he couldn’t bring himself to return home.
They were siblings.
They couldn’t cross that line.
“Look at us now.”
Janice’s hand slid down to his chest, where she felt the frantic pounding of his heart.
“We’ve lost everything, while Nira–a girl who doesn’t even have a wolf spirit anymore–is getting everything she wants.”
Her eyes locked onto his.
“Can you honestly accept that? Don’t you want to take back what belongs to us?”
Aven’s self–control was slipping away.
He grabbed her wrist.
His voice came out rough.

“What do you want me to do?”
A satisfied smile curved Janice’s lips.

She slipped free and walked toward her vanity, deliberately letting one strap of her nightgown slide from her shoulder.
Watching him through the mirror, she slowly brushed her hair.
“Aven, I heard Nira is treating those patients with memory damage at the Army Hospital.”
She continued brushing her hair.
“I want to know how the treatment is going.”
His eyes followed every movement.
His throat tightened. “Why are you interested in that?”
Janice turned around and crossed the room barefoot.
Stopping directly in front of him, she lightly tapped the knot of his tie.
“Isn’t Nira supposed to be some Miracle Healer? If she fails, that’s something we can use against her.”
Her fingers drifted lower, tracing slow circles against his chest.
“And besides…”
She leaned closer.
Her warm breath brushed against his neck.
“You’ve always been good at gathering information.”
Aven’s breathing grew heavier as the familiar scent steadily eroded what little judgment he still had left.
He caught her hand.
“That’s all? You just want information?”
“Of course.”

Janice laughed softly and slipped free once more.
As she turned away, her hair brushed across his cheek.
“When you get back…”
She glanced over her shoulder and flashed him a flirtatious smile.
“I’ll make sure you’re rewarded.”
Aven’s
eyes had already begun to glaze over. He nodded mechanically.
“Okay… I’ll go tomorrow.”
Janice watched him leave.
The moment the door closed, the seductive smile vanished.
“Idiot.”
The word was filled with contempt.
The next day, Aven arrived at the Army Hospital under the pretense of visiting a patient.

Carrying flowers and a fruit basket, he crossed the lobby looking perfectly relaxed, completely unaware that every move he made was being monitored.
Inside a military surveillance room, technicians tracked him across multiple screens. Even the sweat gathering at his temples was clearly visible.
As he turned into a hallway, a nurse pushing a medication cart accidentally bumped into him.
Medicine bottles scattered across the floor.
The nurse apologized repeatedly while crouching to gather them.
During the confusion, the second button on Aven’s suit jacket quietly came loose.
He never
noticed.
A custodian swept it away minutes later, and it was eventually sent off with the hospital’s waste for processing.
Back at the Soren estate, Janice stared at a surveillance feed that had suddenly gone black.

She pounded at the keyboard in frustration, trying to restore the connection.
Nothing happened.
“Useless!”
She grabbed the nearest object and hurled it across the room.
Meanwhile, Aven straightened his tie and pushed open a hospital room door.
This visit wasn’t entirely an act.
He had genuinely come to see Griffin Holloway, a former training partner and fellow Alpha heir.
