For a brief moment, clarity returned to the old man’s clouded eyes.

“Doctor…” he said weakly. “If I don’t make it through this…”

“Don’t talk like that,” I said gently. “We’re going to get you through this.”

But he stubbornly shook his head.

His fingers tightened around my wrist.
