When I opened my eyes again, bright sunlight poured through the window. Instinctively, I tried to raise a hand to shield my eyes, only to realize my right arm wouldn’t respond at all.

A hoarse voice came from beside the bed.

I slowly turned my head and found Kade sitting there.

For a moment, my chest tightened.

The man who was always impeccably composed looked exhausted. His shirt was wrinkled, dark stubble shadowed his jaw, and his eyes were bloodshot from days without proper rest.

He was gripping my left hand so tightly that his knuckles had gone pale.

“Ten days.”

His voice caught before he continued.

“You were unconscious for ten full days.”

I tried to speak, but only a faint breath escaped.

Kade immediately picked up a glass of water and carefully brought it to my lips.

The warmth slid down my throat, and only then did I realize just how weak I was.

I hadn’t felt this drained since years ago, when I had nearly lost Lyra for the first time.

“How are the patients?” I asked, struggling to get the words out.

A shadow crossed Kade’s face.

“They’ll all be fine.”

His fingers lightly brushed the bandages wrapped around my right arm.

“But you…” His voice lowered. “The damage to your body was severe. Zach said nobody knows how much function you’ll recover.”

I tried moving the fingers on my right hand.

A sharp pain shot through my arm immediately.

I closed my eyes and let out a slow breath.

“It was worth it.”

Without warning, Kade leaned forward and carefully pulled me into his arms.

“You idiot…”

Kade pulled back instantly.

“This is what you call having it under control?”

His voice remained low, but the emotion underneath it was unmistakable.

He pushed back the sleeve on my injured arm, exposing the bruising and the countless needle marks.

“These?” he demanded. “This was your careful plan?”

The sudden anger caught me off guard.

I instinctively tried to pull my arm back, but he refused to let go.

“Do you have any idea what it felt like seeing them wheel you out unconscious?” His voice shook. “Do you know what it did to me when they told me you’d tested the poison on yourself?”

His jaw tightened.

“For the first time in my life, I wished you’d never learned medicine.”
