Chapter 281 The Last Move

Nira’s POV:

Noah’s tone was unusually serious.

“We’ve already had a team quietly search her residence. So far, we haven’t found any trace of the toxin. The reason we haven’t moved on her yet is because we’re trying to identify the foreign network operating behind her.”

He lowered his voice before continuing.

“The problem is that she’s unpredictable. If we corner her too aggressively, we’re concerned she’ll do something reckless and take innocent people down with her.”

A knot formed in my stomach.

Without thinking, I tightened my hands into fists.

Kade noticed immediately. His thumb brushed gently across the back of my hand, a silent reminder that I wasn’t carrying this burden alone.

“Try not to worry,” Noah said firmly. “She’s under round–the–clock surveillance. We won’t give her another chance to hurt anyone.”

I nodded, feeling somewhat reassured.

Still, the uneasy feeling lingering in the back of my mind refused to disappear.

At the same time, a midday news program was airing on television.

The anchor smiled confidently at the camera.

“Following treatment with the breakthrough medication developed by Nira Soren, all seventeen patients previously suffering from memory impairment have now fully recovered and been released from the hospital…”

A sharp crash cut through the room.

A crystal wineglass exploded against the wall.

Red wine splattered across the white surface, streaking downward like blood.

Janice stood frozen in place, her chest heaving.

Her claws dug so deeply into her palms that crescent–shaped marks appeared in her skin.

“Nira.”

The name left her mouth like a curse.

“Why won’t you die?”

The hatred burning in her eyes overwhelmed whatever caution she still possessed.

Ignoring every warning she’d been given, she grabbed her phone and made a call.

The line connected after two rings.

A cold electronic female voice answered immediately.

“I told you not to contact me. If we speak, I initiate it.”

Janice clenched the phone so tightly her hand shook.

“The toxin was worthless!” she snapped. “Those seventeen people are alive, and Nira came out of this without a scratch!”

Silence followed.

Then a low laugh crackled through the speaker.

“You really are stupid.”

The woman’s voice dripped with contempt.

“The toxin was real. What I didn’t anticipate was that Nira would develop a cure so quickly.”

“I don’t care.” Janice’s voice rose sharply. “Then give me something stronger. If you hate her as much as I do, our interests still align.”

“You’re acting on emotion instead of strategy.”

The warning in the woman’s voice was unmistakable.

“Right now is the worst possible time to move.”

“No.”

Janice’s anger suddenly shifted into something far more unsettling.

Desperation.

“You know what I’ve sacrificed to get this far. Just give me one more chance. This time nothing will go wrong.”

The silence stretched on much longer than before.

Finally, the electronic voice returned.

“Three days later. The usual location. And listen carefully. This is the last favor you’ll ever get from me.”

The call disconnected.

Slowly, a twisted smile spread across Janice’s face.

She walked to the window and stared toward the distant hospital skyline.

“Nira,” she whispered, “this time I’m going to make sure you regret surviving.”

Three days later, Janice stepped into EverLife Biotech wearing a carefully prepared disguise.

A wig softened her features.

Black–rimmed glasses altered her appearance just enough to avoid attention.

As she exited the elevator, satisfaction gleamed in her eyes.

Everything was finally falling into place.

She adjusted the strap of her handbag and crossed the lobby with purpose.

Just as she rounded a corner, an Omega janitor appeared unexpectedly from a side corridor.

The collision was unavoidable.

“Oh!”

Janice stumbled backward.

Coffee splashed across the front of her cream–colored skirt.

The stain spread immediately.
