Chapter 282 A Perfect Setup

“I’m so sorry!”

The intern looked completely panicked.

She dropped to her knees and hurriedly began gathering the scattered paperwork.

As she did, she intentionally positioned herself between Janice and the fallen handbag.

A passing employee immediately stopped.

“Oh no, let me help.”

The woman crouched beside the intern.

Her movements appeared completely natural.

Within seconds, two nearly identical black handbags had quietly exchanged places again.

“Get away from my stuff!”

Janice shoved the employee aside and snatched up the bag herself.

The employee recoiled as though frightened and hurried away without another word.

The intern continued apologizing.

“Really, I’m sorry. I just started here.”

Janice shot her a murderous look.

Then she immediately unzipped the bag and checked inside. Everything appeared to be exactly where it should be.

Satisfied, she closed it again.

“Next time, watch where you’re going.”

She turned sharply and headed toward the elevator.

Behind her, the intern picked up the final folder. A faint smile touched her lips.

Although Janice now possessed the toxin, she faced a much bigger problem.

She couldn’t get anywhere near Nira.

Poisoning someone was easy in theory.

Actually getting close enough was another matter entirely.

At eleven that night, Janice stopped outside Aven’s study carrying two glasses of red wine.

The rich burgundy liquid caught the light as it swirled inside the glasses.

She knocked softly.

“Aven? Are you still awake?”

Inside, Aven was reviewing case files. He looked up in surprise when the door opened.

Janice stepped inside wearing a black silk slip dress.

The delicate straps left very little to the imagination.

“It’s late,” he said, setting down his pen.

“Did you

you need something?”

She crossed the room and placed both glasses on his desk.

Her fingertips brushed deliberately across the back of his hand.

“I heard you’ve got a major case coming up.”

She leaned forward slightly. The movement wasn’t accidental.

“I thought maybe we should celebrate early.”

Aven’s jaw tightened.

Ever since the day Janice had casually revealed that she knew about his feelings, he’d barely slept. “We can celebrate after I win.”

He deliberately placed his pen between them like a barrier.

“You should probably get some rest.”

Janice laughed softly.

With one finger, she pushed the pen aside. “What exactly are you afraid of?”

She perched on the edge of his desk. The pointed tip of her heel traced lightly along his pant leg.

“Me?”

She pressed a chilled wineglass against his throat.

“Or yourself?”

A drop of wine slipped over the rim and disappeared beneath his shirt collar.

Aven’s wolf ears had already emerged. His self–control was hanging by a thread.

He grabbed her wrist instinctively. The contact felt dangerous enough that he released her immediately.

“What do you want from me?” he asked, his voice rough.

Janice smiled knowingly.

“Why do you always assume I want something?”

She lifted the glass to his lips.

“Maybe tonight I just wanted to share a drink.”

The wine carried traces of her perfume. Aven felt heat building behind his eyes.

“Janice…”

His voice was barely recognizable.

“Do you understand what you’re doing right now?”

She smiled.

“Perfectly.”

Then she leaned close enough for her breath to brush his ear. “I’m spending time with my brother.”

“Don’t.”

The word came out harsher than he intended.
