Aven caught Janice’s wandering hand and held it still, his voice strained with the last of his resistance.

Moonlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting the shadows of two entwined figures across the study wall.

The room was a mess. Books and papers lay scattered everywhere, long forgotten.

Janice’s fingers drifted lazily across Aven’s bare chest as she listened to the lingering rhythm of his heartbeat. A faint smile touched her lips.

“Aven, do you remember?”

Her voice was soft, almost nostalgic.

“When I was twelve and that rogue attacked me? You shifted and carried me all the way to the hospital.”

Her fingertips traced the scar on his shoulder blade.

Of course he remembered.

The rain had been coming down in sheets, and he hadn’t yet learned how to fully control his wolf spirit. He’d been terrified something would happen to Janice, so he’d carried her through the storm without stopping.

In his panic, he’d fallen three times before reaching the hospital.

Looking back, it was a miracle neither of them had gotten hurt worse.

“When I think about everything we’ve been through…” Janice pushed herself upright, her hair cascading over his chest. “You’ve always been the one protecting me.”

She lowered her head and pressed a gentle kiss against the scar.

He moved behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

The moment he felt her trembling, a memory surfaced. When they were children, she used to

curl up in his arms after nightmares, seeking comfort the exact same way.

“What do you want me to do?” he heard himself ask.

Janice slowly turned around.

Moonlight glimmered in the tears gathered in her eyes.

“As long as Nira dies …our family will have a chance to rebuild.”

Her gaze locked onto his. “And then we can finally be together forever.”

When she kissed him, all Aven could taste was salt from her tears.

“Okay.”

His arms tightened around her as he buried his face in her hair. He never noticed the fleeting look of triumph that flashed across her eyes.

A cold smile appeared on Janice’s lips.

I’d been in the hospital for more than two weeks, and honestly, I was ready to leave.

I felt well enough to continue recovering at home, but Kade refused to even consider it. In his opinion, I wasn’t going anywhere until I was fully healed.

So I spent most of my time lying in bed, bored out of my mind and chatting with Lyra through our bond.

The door to my room opened quietly.

A familiar face peeked inside.

The moment Tessa spotted me,

Then she looked me over from head to toe.

The second I held out my arm, she wrapped herself around me.

Despite her enthusiasm, she barely applied any pressure. Instead, she rested her head on my shoulder and stayed there for a moment.

That’s when I noticed her eyes. They were red. She’d definitely been crying.

I gently patted her back. “Okay, what happened?”

Tessa immediately sat down beside my bed and let out a miserable sigh.

“My parents and Derrick’s family are discussing an alliance marriage.”

“He saw my first shift when I completely lost control and ended up covered in mud.”

She raised a finger.

“I know embarrassing stories about him that would absolutely ruin his reputation.”

Another finger.

“And there are still videos somewhere of us fighting when we were kids.”

I couldn’t stop myself from laughing.

“Honestly, that sounds like a pretty strong relationship.”

“That’s not the point.”

For the first time, Tessa looked genuinely serious.
