She was stunned. For a second, it seemed like she forgot I didn’t even have a wolf. Forgot we weren’t supposed to be equals. She didn’t talk back.

Janice quickly stepped up, all wide eyes and mock concern.

Don’t be mad, Nira. Ivy didn’t mean anything by it. She just speaks her mind, that’s all. Here, let me apologize for her.”

Ivy immediately stepped in front of Janice like a guard dog, eyes narrowing into sharp wolf slits.

Back off, Nira. If you’ve got a problem, take it up with me. Stop picking on Janice.”

People nearby started murmuring, some of them even speaking up, accusing me of bullying poor little Janice.

It was almost funny.

To them, I was a pathetic nobody, no wolf, no standing. But somehow they still thought I had the power to bully a highranking wolf like her.

No, this wasn’t about me being a threat. It was about them needing someone to step on.

Janice did what she did besttears right on time, voice just shaky enough to sound sincere. She kept saying no one should fight because of her, all while feeding the fire and letting the room turn against me.

And she did it all without getting her hands dirty. I just stood there watching her work the crowd.

Honestly, sometimes I had to admire her. She had this talent for weaponizing sympathy, making everyone else fight her battles while she kept her halo intact.

But I wasn’t the same girl I used to be. I had had enough.

Shut. Up,” I snapped.

The whole group froze. I looked past them, eyes locked on Janice.

You know, you’re pretty good at this. Ever considered acting?

Her face went pale. You’re staging the whole scene just right. A few tears, a few gasps, stand back and let your friends throw the punches. They take the heat, you stay the innocent sweetheart.

Janice tried to recover. II don’t know what you’re talking about

I cut her off with a wave of my hand.

Don’t bother explaining. You don’t have to get it. As long as they do, that’s all that matters. Let’s see how loyal they are when they realize you’ve been playing them the whole time.

The people around Janice looked visibly uncomfortable after what I said, like they were finally starting to connect the dots.

She rushed to defend herself, panic creeping into her voice.

Don’t listen to her! I’ve always seen you as my real friends.

I let out a cold laugh.

Friends? Really? Tell me, have you ever stood up for them? Ever taken a hit for them? Or is it just friendship when it benefits you?

The girls standing beside her looked uneasy. One by one, they shifted uncomfortably. Then Ivy, the loudest one a moment ago, stepped aside. I gotta go. I’ve got stuff to do.

The rest followed her lead, making awkward excuses as they slipped away. Janice stood alone, eyes wide. Then she turned and ran, crying into her hands.

I was about to walk away when someone clapped slowly behind me. A girl stepped forward from the crowd, grinning.

That was amazing.

She looked about my age, wore a leather jacket, and had highrank wolf energy coming off her in waves.

Lyra caught the vibe too. It wasn’t hostile. I gave her a nod.

She grinned wider and slung an arm around my shoulders.
