Chapter 329 The Captive’s Trail
Nira’s POV:

“She’s been relocated!” The raider leader, who had been all bravado moments before, was now trembling like a frightened puppy as he stared at me. “The boss got a call this morning… then he took her into the Dark Desert.”
Zachary and the rest of the team were wide–eyed. Any trace of the contempt or dismissal they’d shown toward a woman “without a wolf–spirit” was gone, completely replaced by raw fear.
Clark swallowed hard, muttering just loud enough for me to catch it. “Jesus, she’s terrifying. And to think how we treated her before…”
I acted like I hadn’t heard a thing. Calmly, I withdrew the acupuncture needles, stood up, and said flatly, “See? This would’ve gone
lot smoother if you’d just cooperated from the start.”
I turned to Kade. “How far is the Dark Desert from here?”
Kade quickly pulled up the digital map, his brow furrowing. “At least sixty klicks out.”
Zachary went pale. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. That place is a death trap.” He gestured wildly. “Sandstorms, sinkholes, temperature swings that’ll kill you… and then there’s the legendary black sandstorms–they say those things can flay the skin right off your bones.”
A nervous ripple went through the team. I caught the low murmurs.
“Remember that elite Special Ops pack that went in there last year? They never even recovered the bodies…”
“I heard your bond with your wolf–spirit gets completely severed in there…”
“I didn’t sign up for a suicide run…”
Clark looked at me, hesitant. “Ms. Soren… that place really isn’t meant for anyone to go walking into.”
Desmond shot to his feet. “If you won’t go, I’ll go alone!” He turned to Kade and me, a silent plea in his eyes, though he didn’t say another word.
Kade and I exchanged a glance. An understanding passed between us instantly.
I gave a slight nod.
Kade immediately clapped a hand on Desmond’s shoulder. “We’re going with you.”
Zachary’s expression turned stony. “Mr. Howell, you have no idea how bad it gets out there-”

“I know,” Kade cut him off. “We gave our word to the Hudson family that we’d bring her back. We’re not done yet.”
One of the younger operatives stepped forward. “Captain Zachary… I just found my fated mate. She’s back home waiting for the Bonding Ceremony…”
Soon, more than half the team had backed out.
I looked up and spoke firmly. “For anyone who’s still in, you’ll get one ‘Vital Core Pill‘ and one vial of ‘Hemostatic Vitality Serum

tretrieved several small medical cases from a concealed compartment. “The Vital Core Pill can keep a heart beating for seven days. even under extreme trauma. The serum stops internal bleeding or contact.” I paused, letting it sink in. “These compounds are made with deep–sea Siren oil and millennial ginseng. The raw ingredients alone are worth a fortune. You couldn’t buy half a dose on the black market.”
A few of the remaining operatives exchanged looks, interest flashing in their eyes.
Clark was the first to step forward. “I’m in. After seeing what Ms. Soren can do, ! like our odds.**
In the end, eight team members, including Zachary, decided to stay on the mission.
Kade did a final equipment check. “We move out at first light. Nira, do you need any special supplies from the kits?”
I was already organizing my medical pack. “I’ll need some desert sage extract and prickly pear cactus gel… also,” I glanced at Zachary, “is there any known water source near the Dark Desert? An oasis?“.
Zachary shook his head. “Nothing permanent. But…” he hesitated, “there are old pack tales about a ‘Phantom Oasis‘ deep in the wastes. It’s supposed to move, never in the same place twice. No one’s ever confirmed it.”
Desmond’s eyes lit up. “Could that be their hideout? Camouflaged or something?”
Kade looked thoughtful. “It’s a strong possibility. Nira, how long will your repellent powders last out there?”
