There was a long stretch of silence before Kade finally spoke. For now, our only option is to keep moving and watch for any water sources along the trail.

The mood grew tense, heavy. Then Clark’s voice cut through, From what! spotted earlier today, there’s bound to be water somewhere in this area. If we push forward, we’ll find something drinkable.

The others perked up at that, tongues running over parched lips. Clark’s spent years out in the desertif he says there’s water, there’s water.

Relief spread through the group, smiles creeping back onto weary faces..

Kade and I exchanged a look. We both knew it was just another one of Clark’s storiessomething to keep everyone moving, to hold hope together when there wasn’t any to spare.

No water. And in this cursed stretch of land, we’d even lost our bond with the wolf spirit. Things were going south fast.

My chest tightened, a weight settling deeper.

Alright, everyone, get some rest,Zachary called out. We move at first light to find that water. Last one there drinks sand.

Let’s go, then. Get some sleep!

As soon as the sky began to lighten, we packed up and pushed on.

The Dark Desert glowed an unsettling reddishblack in the early morning, the sand crunching faintly under each step.

Hold up!Desmond, who was leading, suddenly stopped and pointed toward a dune in the distance. You see that?

We all followed his gazea shadowy figure flashed past, slipping behind the dune before any of us could react.

Go!Zachary yelled, and we took off after it.

But by the time we climbed the dune, there was nothing. Just empty, flat sand stretching out ahead.

What the hell,Clark muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. This place is seriously messed up.

Two hours later, movement againup ahead, between the rolling dunes.

This time we didn’t rush. We circled around quietly, only to come across the remains of what must have once been an oasis.

Water!Desmond sprinted toward the central pool, but his excitement vanished as fast as it came. Dammit! It’s been sabotaged. The pool had been blown open at the bottom, and what little water remained gave off a foul, stagnant smell.

Every date palm had been hacked down, fresh axe marks still visible on the stumps.

Bastards,Zachary snarled, kicking a rock hard. They’re trying to wipe us out.

That was when I caught movement againbehind a low rock wall this time. There! They’re back!

New everyone saw it clearly, Kade signaled immediately, and the group spet into three, flanking the figure from different sides.

Whoever it was seemed to realize they were being followed and broke into a sprint. After about five hundred yards, they suddenly stopped and glanced back, confusedtheir pursuers had seemingly vanished.

Why aren’t they following?they muttered, turning to head back.

But the moment they rounded the corner, we had them completely surrounded.

Zachary lunged forward, knocking the stranger to the ground with a solid kick. Think you can run, you son of a bitch?
