My wrists were locked in reinforced bone shackles, the cuffs lined with tiny, sharp barbs. Every slight movement drove them deeper into my skin.
Without my wolf’s spirit to shield me, my tolerance for pain was practically gone–each sting ripped a cry from my throat.
But when I looked over at Kade, I realized he was far worse off.
His right arm hung limp and twisted, clearly dislocated. Bruises covered his face, yet he kept his head raised, defiant even now.
Across the way, Desmond and Clark were chained together, both battered and bleeding in their own ways.
“Time’s up,” Richard announced, raising the ceremonial dagger–the one with the ruby set into its hilt. The blade caught the morning light and gleamed with a bloody sheen. “This pendant shall bear witness to this sacred offering!”
The guards forced me down onto the stone altar. The cold surface was already stained with old blood, and the damp, metallic smell clung to my clothes. It made my skin crawl.
Richard leaned close. He trailed the tip of the dagger lightly along my forearm, leaving a thin red line in its wake.
Down below, Kade’s head jerked up. His eyes burned crimson, and his voice emerged ragged, like something torn from a nightmare. “Richard! Touch her again and I swear on the Moon Goddess–your entire bloodline will pay!”
The raw fury in his words was so intense the nearby guards instinctively stepped back.
Chains clanked violently as Kade threw himself against them. Blood dripped from his shackles, splattering the sandy ground in vivid drops.
Watching him like that twisted something deep in my chest.
These monsters… If I could just reconnect with Lyra, I’d tear every last one of them apart right now.
Richard let out a cruel, low laugh. “Big talk, Mr. Howell. Too bad…” He pressed the dagger flat against my throat. “Too bad you can’t even help yourself. What exactly do you think you’re going to do to me?”
He turned his attention back to me and raised the blade, aiming straight for my heart.
Just as the dagger began its descent, Kade roared–a true Alpha’s cry, thunderous enough to shake the air around us.
“Aaaagh!”
With a brutal surge of strength, he twisted his already injured right arm. A sickening crack echoed as he dislocated his own shoulder, tearing free from the shackle in a spray of blood.
In one explosive motion, he lunged toward Richard.
They collided and crashed onto the altar together.
Kade was already badly hurt, and the impact left him sprawled and struggling to rise.

heart hammered wildly in my chest.
Richard seized the moment, flipping over and pinning Kade down, his eyes blazing with murderous intent.
“You just had to do it the hard way!” he snarled, and plunged the dagger deep into Kade’s left arm. The blade pierced straight through muscle and scraped bone
The sight of blood pouring from Kade’s arm stole the air from my lungs.
Kade gritted his teeth against the pain, then sank them hard into Richard’s shoulder, refusing to let go.
