Jack, who was leading the group, immediately raised his hands in a placating gesture “Ms. Hudson, it’s all right–we’re here on behalf of the Hudson family. We came to get you out.” He kept his voice low, urgent. “Mr. Hudson headed into the Dark Desert looking for you. You didn’t cross paths?”

Natalie didn’t lower the blade. Her guarded expression didn’t soften. “Show me proof”

Jack quickly fished a token from his pocket. “From Desmond. It’s his mark.”

“We lost contact with Mr. Hudson’s party. Started to worry, so we turned back to track them…”

Natalie examined the engraving under the pale moonlight: a silver–gray wolf emblem, distinct to the Hudson bloodline. It checked out.

Some of the tension left her shoulders, though she kept the dagger ready. “Desmond… Pre’s here?”

“Not just him,” Jack ventured a step closer. “There’s a doctor with them–goes by Dr. Soren…” He hesitated, studying Natalie’s features. “She looks… a lot like you. Her name’s Nira.”

“What did you say?” Natalie’s voice wavered. “What young woman?”

Jack blinked, thrown by her intensity. “The one traveling with Mr. Hudson. Pretty, quiet–resembles you.”

Natalie’s breath caught. She forced the question out. “How old is she?”

“Early twenties, maybe. Twenty–two or three?”

The dagger slipped from Natalie’s grip and thudded into the sand.

She staggered back, face going ashen. “Twenty… twenty years…”

Suddenly she seized Jack’s arm, nails biting into his sleeve. “Where is she? Where are they now?”

Startled, Jack answered fast. “Mr. Hudson took the whole group toward the heart of the Dark Desert–to pull you and Mr. Hawke

out.”

Natalie’s eyes sharpened with dreadful clarity.

She remembered now–during their escape from the stronghold, Richard’s crazed laughter ringing out, his order booming after them. “After them! Don’t let a single one get away!”

It was because most of the guards had been dispatched to chase them that she and Killian had found an opening to slip through.

“Oh, god,” Natalie whispered. “It’s a setup!”

She spun toward Killian, unconscious on the ground, her voice cracking. “Killian… Desmond and the others… they’re walking right

into it.”

Jack moved to support her as she swayed. “Ms. Hudson, try to stay calm. We’ll-”

“Take me to them. Now.” Natalie cut him off, eyes blazing with a ferocity that made even the seasoned fighters pause. “I mean it- right now.”
