Pater’s expression flickered between disbelief and rage before he finally brought his fist down hard on the table. “Deall But you leave the formula with me.”

I gently placed my hand over hers and stepped around to face Pater directly. “Like I told you, what I gave you is just a temporary fix.”

My voice stayed steady. “To actually heal the sickness, you need three rare herbs–and they only grow inside my pack’s territory. I’m the only one who can retrieve them.”

Pater snorted. “You expect me to buy that?”

“You don’t have to,” I replied calmly. “But in about a year, your lungs will begin to harden. Every breath will feel like being stabbed. And in the final months, you’ll lose your wolf spirit completely. After that, you’ll cough up blood until there’s nothing left.”

I held his gaze. “It won’t be a quick end.”

For just a second, raw fear showed in Pater’s eyes.

The tent fell dead silent. Everyone was waiting on his call.

His face worked through another round of conflict before he finally slammed the table again, harder this time. “Fine! Get out of here! But remember this,” he pointed straight at me, “if you don’t deliver the cure on time, I’ll make sure the Hudson family goes down with me, even if it’s the last thing I do.”

Once we were outside, Natalie’s hands were still trembling slightly. I nudged her arm. “You okay?”

She turned and pulled me into a tight hug. “You reckless girl… Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?”

I stood there, stunned. The warmth of her embrace made my eyes burn.

“I knew what I was doing.” I said softly. “And there was no way I was letting him walk all over you.”

When she drew back, Natalie’s eyes held nothing but warmth. She even smiled a little.
