Chapter 343 The Medicine Exchange

Natalie returned to discuss their next move with Killian. Despite his lingering distrust toward Nira and Kade, they needed to get out of this place and fast.

Killian pushed himself upright in bed. His face was pale, but his gaze remained sharp. “That greedy bastard Pater went back on his word after all.”

Even though Natalie had sounded confident earlier, she wasn’t completely sure herself.

She wasn’t afraid to die–but she couldn’t die yet. Not until she knew whether Nira was really her daughter. She had to get everyone out of here safely.

Just then, someone knocked on the door.

Nira’s POV:

When I walked in after knocking, Killian’s guarded expression made it clear he still didn’t trust me.

Natalie, though, gave me a warm, gentle smile.

“What is it, Nira?”

“They won’t let us take Richard.” I’d gone to where they were holding him, but Pater’s men stopped me. Now I had no choice but to come to Natalie.

Her face fell. She knew as well as I did–with all the trouble Richard had stirred up, we couldn’t leave him behind.

“I’ll talk to Pater,” she said, already turning toward the door.

“I’m coming with you.” I followed right behind her.

Back inside Pater’s tent, Natalie’s expression turned colder than a desert night.

“Mr. Walsh,” she cut straight to the point, “our agreement included handing Richard over.”

Pater leaned back in his worn leather chair, a gold cap on his tooth catching the firelight. “Natalie, what we agreed on was me lending you men and weapons to rescue your people. Nothing more.”

“You-” Natalie’s hands clenched, knuckles whitening.

I rested a light hand on her arm and stepped forward. “Mr. Walsh, did Richard offer you something?”

Pater’s eyes

narrowed, then he broke into a smirk. “Sharp girl. Yeah, Richard made me a deal.”

He held up three fingers. “Seventy percent of the diamond mine. Then you get him.”

“Seventy?” Natalie let out an angry laugh. “Why not ask for the whole thing?”

The alt in the tent grew thick with tension.

I seized the opening. “How about a compromise? Fifty percent of the raine.”

Pater rubbed his jaw, then snorted. “You drive a hard bargain. But-” He slammed a hand on the table. “I want sixty. Or none of you walk out of here.”

A cold fury flashed in Natalie’s eyes. Before she could speak, I gave her a slight, calming shake of my head. Then I pulled a small glass vial from my medical kit and turned to Pater. “You’ve been waking up coughing blood lately, haven’t you?”

His face tightened. “How’d you know that?”

“It’s a fever sickness–comes from the bond to your wolf being strained out here in the Dark Desert. Throws your whole system out of balance.” I tilted the vial slightly. “This medicine treats it.”

The tent went quiet.

“How do I know it works?” Pater’s eyes locked onto the bottle in my hand.

I tossed it to him easily. “Try it and see.”

He fumbled the catch, clearly caught off guard–then suspicion clouded his face.

His second–in–command spoke up quickly, “Boss, be careful. Could be a trick.”

I gave a low laugh. “Have someone else test it if you want. Half the crew in the Dark Desert has this sickness anyway.”

Pater studied me for a long moment, then jerked his chin toward the entrance. His second brought in one of their men who looked even worse than Pater–thin, pale, and shaking with coughs.
