Kade stroked my hair gently with his uninjured left hand. “That guy’s behavior was way too suspicious, so I kept watching him. When I spotted him sneaking off to meet Richard after dark, I knew we had trouble.”

Desmond’s expression shifted as though everything had just clicked. “Wait–so you two already knew they were coming for us? And you warned Pater ahead of time to set up that ambush out there?”

Kade and I shared a knowing smile.

“Seriously?” Desmond protested, throwing his hands up. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I really thought I was a goner back there.”

He slumped back in his seat, grumbling, “I’m too young and handsome to go out like that. Haven’t even met my fated mate yet. Dying now would’ve been such a waste.”

Natalie glanced over, a playful glint in her eyes. “So you’re looking for a girlfriend, are you? Once we’re home, I’ll have your father host a few gatherings. Plenty of pack socialites would love to meet you.”

“No way, Aunt Natalie!” Desmond waved his hands in panic. “I’m not ready to settle down–I still want to have some fun!”

We all broke into laughter.

Soon the convoy rolled forward again, leaving a winding trail of tire tracks across the vast expanse of the Dark Desert.

The sun hung low on the horizon, washing the dunes in golden light and casting a warm, hopeful glow over our journey home.

Once the vehicles were moving steadily, I quickly bandaged Richard’s leg–not out of kindness, but to make sure he wouldn’t bleed out too fast.

We were still deep in Dark Desert territory, cut off from wolf spirit’s energy. Without our wolf spirits active, his wound wouldn’t heal on its own without proper care.

Richard winced sharply but didn’t dare resist. Under his breath, he muttered, “You’re going to regret this…”

Kade shot him an icy look. “Sounds like you’re volunteering to lose the other leg, too.”

Richard clamped his mouth shut and shrank back into the corner, not moving a muscle.

Desmond twisted around in his seat and grinned. “Works better than painkillers, huh, Mr. Howell?”

I couldn’t hold back a soft laugh.

Five days later, our plane touched down at Creekshade Pack.

Edmund himself was waiting at the airport, accompanied by a line of sleek SUVS.

The head of the Hudson family stood on the tarmac in a sharp tailored suit, craning his neck anxiously until he spotted Natalie coming down the stairs first.

“Natalie!” He hurried over and took her by the shoulders, looking her over carefully. “You’ve lost weight. The Dark Desert wasn’t easy on you, was it?”

Natalle offered a tired but genuine smile. “I’m alright, Edmond.”

She stepped aside so Edmund could see Kade and me behind her. “We made it back safely, thanks to Ms. Soren and Mr. Howell?

“Ms. Soren, Mr. Howell—I can’t thank you enough,” Edmund said, sincerity clear in his voice.

“Hey, what about me?” Desmond squeezed into view. “I helped out too, you know.”

Natalie chuckled softly. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get your reward–maybe introduce you to a nice potential mate once we’re settled.”

Desmond’s face fell instantly, earning another round of quiet laughter from the group.

Edmund then turned to Killian. His usual coolness toward his brother–in–law was evident, but as he took in Killian’s pale, weary appearance, his frown softened with concern. “Are you hurt?”

Killian straightened up beside Natalie. “Thank you, Edmund. I’ll be fine.”

Edmund gave a slight nod. “Good. Let’s head home–Dad’s been waiting.”

The motorcade rolled smoothly toward Hudson Manor, where Gordon stood at the entrance, looking as though he hadn’t moved in

hours.

When his eyes landed on Natalie, the older man’s composure broke. Tears welled up as he pulled her into a firm embrace.

“Natalie… You’re really back. That’s all that matters.”

Natalie hugged him back, her voice gentle. “I’m home, Dad. I’m sorry for making you worry.”
