Twas propped up against the headboard of the hospital bed, my tablet balanced on my lap as 1 Watched the live feed. A soug sm hugged at the corners of my mouth.
Everything was falling into place just as I’d planned. Barring any surprises, I’d soon uncover the puppet master pulling the strings behind all this.
Did they really think their amateur schemes could outmaneuver me? What I’d learned from my foster father-that cunning old fox- would keep them playing catch-up for decades.
Still, getting poisoned and stabbed had thrown me off guard.
That guy fought dirty.
I was still turning the events over in my mind when the door swung open and Kade walked in carrying a medicine tray, his brow furrowed. “The nurse told me you were out of bed again.”
I quickly set the tablet aside and put on my sweetest smile. “I was just watching the press conference for a minute…
“A minute?” Kade placed the tray on the nightstand, his voice tight. “What if your stitches tear?”
As he spoke, he carefully lifted the blanket to check the bandage. Only when he saw no fresh bleeding did his expression soften slightly.
From the tablet, Quentin’s booming voice filled the room. Kade glanced at the screen. “Your plan actually worked.”
“It only worked because you moved the medical supplies ahead of schedule. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to pull it off.” ! reached for the water glass, but the motion tugged at my wound and I let out a sharp inhale.
Kade was at my side in an instant, his hand steadying my arm-firm, gentle, leaving no room for argument. “Lie back down.”
He picked up the glass and held it to my lips. “Why do you always end up in these situations?”
I took small sips, blinking up at him. “It was a last-minute change… The assassin came out of nowhere. I had to improvise.”
1
“Improvise?” Kade set the glass down, his voice dropping low. “You could’ve told me you were faking the poisoning. Why keep me in the dark too? When I saw you lying there unconscious…” He trailed off, turning toward the window to take a slow, controlled breath.
I watched the tense line of his shoulders, my own eyes growing strangely warm.
Truth was, I hadn’t been faking it-I really had been poisoned at first. It was Lyra’s heightened energy that fought it off.
Seeing him this worried, I knew keeping him in the dark had been the right call.
Gritting my teeth against the pain, I slid to the edge of the bed and stood, ignoring Lyra’s unexplained aversion to his scent. I stepped behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist. “I’m sorry… I really didn’t have time to explain back then…”
Kade turned and pulled me into a careful embrace, mindful of my bandages. “You always do this… take everything on your own shoulders, and end up covered in bruises.”

A small laugh escaped me, but it pulled at my wound and I winced.
Kade went rigid. “Did it open? Should I call the nurse?”
