I sat down beside Natalie. “Yes, but I’m still figuring things out.” I kept my voice gentle, hoping to soothe her. “Just give it a few more days. Whatever you decide then, I’ll stand by you.”

Natalie turned to look at me, and suddenly her eyes welled up. Tears spilled down her cheeks before she could stop them.

She took my hand, her voice trembling. “I wish so much you were our daughter…”

Watching her break down like that made my own chest tighten. I wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into a careful hug, patting her back in slow, steady circles. “It’s going to be okay,” I said, making sure she heard the certainty in my tone. “I’ll find a way to help you.”

That seemed to open the floodgates. Natalie cried harder, her tears soaking through the fabric of my blouse. Her fingers clutched at the hem, holding on as if it were the only thing keeping her grounded.

After a long while, she finally pulled back, sniffling and wiping hastily at her face. Her makeup was smudged, leaving dark streaks under her eyes. “I’m so sorry… I didn’t mean to fall apart like that. You shouldn’t have to see me this way.”

Natalie swallowed, then nodded back. “Okay. I’ll be careful.”
