Nira's POV:
"Kade fell ill with some strange condition three years ago," Vera said. "He hasn't been seen in public since. The rumors say... he's in a coma. Basically a vegetable."
She looked at me, her expression serious. "Now there's talk that he's not going to make it. His grandmother, Edith Howell, consulted a healer. The healer told her that if Kade could complete a mate bond, the mate's wolf might be able to awaken his."
"A mate bond can bring him back?" I let out a cold laugh. That healer really knew how to play people.
No wonder the Soren family scrambled to drag me back. They wanted the benefits of tying themselves to the Howell family, but weren't about to let their precious Janice marry a dying man.
So naturally, they thought of me. Their biological daughter, the one they saw as a broken, wolfless waste of space.
"Do you want me to do anything about it?" Vera asked, watching me closely.
I rested my chin on one hand, thinking it through. "No. Leave this to me."
"Yes, Miss." She didn't ask questions, simply nodded with respect.
She placed another box in front of me. "This is your new phone. Along with other devices you might need."
I accepted it with a small smile. "Exactly what I needed."
Before I came to the Blazeborn Pack, I lived with my adoptive father in the secluded Silvermoon Pack.
Since childhood, I had been raised as the alpha heir. People around me always treated me with respect and sincerity. I used to think the world worked that way.
But less than a year after arriving at the Soren estate, I lost Lyra and was locked away in an asylum for five years. Out of sight, out of mind.
I knew nothing about the current power dynamics in the Blazeborn Pack.
Now I had to plan carefully. Everything I was about to do, I'd do it alone.
There was no way the Soren family would ever prepare anything for me. In their eyes, Janice was the only daughter worth protecting.
Not long after Vera left, there was another knock at my door.
The moment I caught the scent of the person outside, Lyra stirred, bristling with wariness. "Come in."
The door opened instantly.
Reese's daughter, Rhea walked in, carrying a bowl of soup. She'd been Janice's shadow since she was seven and was now her most loyal assistant.
I gave the soup a casual glance. Something felt off.
"Miss Soren, Janice asked me to bring this to you," Rhea said sweetly, but her eyes held no respect. "She thought it might help you recover."
I gave her a neutral look. I already had a good idea what was really in that soup.
"Put it down."
"I'm supposed to stay and make sure you drink it all," Rhea insisted.
I stared at her for a long second, then forced down my temper. "Fine."
I picked up the bowl and drank the whole thing in one go. Then I handed her the empty bowl without a word.
A flicker of satisfaction passed over her face as she reached for it.
I casually flicked my fingernail and said calmly, "Tell Janice I appreciate the gesture. Her return gift is already on the way."
