I whipped my head around when the noise hit, and what I saw made my stomach drop. A black horse was tearing across the riding field completely out of control, its rider yanking hard on the reins but getting nowhere. The animal wasn’t just spooked, it had gone feral.

A few riders were chasing it down, trying to box it in before anyone got hurt. They were close, almost had it contained, when the woman on its back suddenly snapped, Don’t touch my horse!

She swung her crop at anyone who came near, hitting both riders and horses. The second those horses felt the sting, they panicked, rearing and bolting in all directions, turning the whole place into a mess of dust, shouting, and chaos.

The black horse broke through and charged straight toward Tessa, fast enough to make everything else scatter out of its

way.

Tessa froze for a split second, then snapped back into focus. She pulled hard on the reins, trying to veer off, but her own horse was already losing it, jerking and darting like it had no idea where to go. She managed to steady it with effort, but the black horse didn’t respond at all, not even when she flashed her wolf eyes to intimidate it.

Tessa!Clement’s voice cracked across the field.

Everything blurred together, people shouting, horses screaming, riders struggling to stay mounted.

Something felt off. This wasn’t just a horse getting spooked. Tessa wasn’t going to win against something like that.

I didn’t think twice. I pressed in with my heels and sent my horse surging forward, cutting straight toward her.

The black horse kept charging, eyes bloodshot, foam at its mouth, completely gone. Tessa’s horse wasn’t any better, running wild as she clung to its neck, her face drained of color, her body jolting so hard it looked like she could be thrown any second.

Then she was.

One violent jolt and she lost her grip. She slipped off the saddle, but her foot got caught in the stirrup, leaving her dragged along just inches above the ground.

My pulse spiked.

As I closed in on the black horse, I made the call. I yanked the pin from my hair and drove it forward with everything Lyra had, aiming straight for the artery in its neck.

The pin sank deep.

The horse let out a raw, broken scream, reared up hard, and threw the woman off before crashing down onto the dirt.

I didn’t stop. I turned my horse immediately and went after Tessa.

Her horse was still running full speed, dragging her along. One wrong hit against the ground and she’d be seriously injured.

I pushed faster and finally caught up.

I timed it and jumped clean off my saddle, landing behind her in one motion. I bent down, freed her foot from the stirrup, and hauled her back up onto the horse.
