Chapter 90 The Whistle

Nira’s POV:

The second the sound cut through the air, the black horse’s ears twitched.

Its stride faltered, just barely at first, like something in it hesitated. I kept the whistle steady, letting the rhythm carry. Gradually, the tension in its body eased. The frantic sprint softened into a rough trot, then slowed even more.

By the time it reached the edge of the field, it stopped completely, its legs giving out as it collapsed onto the ground, motionless.

I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding and carefully helped Tessa down.

Her boots hit the grass, but she was still shaking, fear lingering in her eyes even as relief started to settle in.

Clement came running with the trainer right behind him. He looked like he’d been holding his breath the whole time, and the second he saw she was okay, it all broke. He rushed over, checking her over like he needed to be sure.

Tessa, you good? His voice came out tight.

She threw herself into him, tears spilling over. That was terrifying

He wrapped his arms around her, steadying her, murmuring softly until she could breathe again.

Then a sharp voice cut straight through the moment.

I felt my hands tighten before I forced them to relax, my claws threatening to slip out before I reined them back in.

She didn’t stop. You clearly know how to calm a horse with that whistle, so why didn’t you use it? You went straight for the kill. What was that about?

Tessa stepped in beside me without hesitation. Valerie, seriously? Your horse went completely out of control and almost got someone killed, and you’re coming at her? If it wasn’t for Nira, this would’ve ended a whole lot worse.

Right then, Lyra picked up a familiar scent.

I followed the instinct and glanced over. Kade and Briar were already heading our way.

Valerie Flores’s face flushed, but she doubled down, jabbing a finger at me. That was a top bloodline stallion, do you even understand that? Worth more than anything she could ever afford. She doesn’t even have a wolf, she’s not worth half of what that horse was.

I met her gaze, calm and steady. It’s already dead. So what do you want?

Her eyes sharpened. You’re getting on your knees and apologizing. And you’re paying for a replacement.

Tessa immediately moved in front of me. Are you hearing yourself right now? Your horse lost it first. I almost got dragged across
