Nira’s POV:

I never liked making promises before something was actually done, and I had no intention of starting now.

Kade raised an eyebrow slightly, clearly amused, but he didn’t press further. “Alright,” he said, “I’ll wait.”

Before the moment could settle, the quiet in the room was broken by noise outside, hurried footsteps and voices overlapping before the door opened without much ceremony. Tessa rushed in first, her expression tight with worry, while Zane followed a step behind, already looking like he knew this wasn’t going to go smoothly.

“Sorry,” Zane said, glancing toward Kade with a helpless shrug. “I tried to stop her.”

Kade gave a brief nod, clearly not interested in making an issue out of it.

Tessa didn’t waste time on anything else and came straight to me, her eyes scanning me quickly until they landed on my hand. “Are you hurt badly? Let me see.”

“It’s fine,” I said, lifting it slightly to show the bandage. “It’s already taken care of.”

Relief hit her just as fast as the fear had, but it didn’t last long before her emotions caught up with her, her voice shaking as she spoke again. “That was terrifying. If you hadn’t stepped in earlier, I don’t even know what would’ve happened to me.”

I reached out and lightly patted her shoulder, keeping my tone steady. “It’s over now. You’re safe.”

She wiped her eyes quickly, frustration replacing the fear almost immediately. “Valerie was completely out of line. It was obviously her fault, and she still tried to turn it on you. My brother said she’s the kind of person who holds grudges, so you should be careful. She might try something later.”

I let out a small, quiet laugh, not dismissive, just certain. “Has anyone actually managed to get the better of me so far? If she wants to try again, I won’t stop her.“–

Power, status, influence, none of that meant much to me in the long run. If things really escalated, I could walk away from all of it, return to Silvermoon Pack, and disappear completely if I had to. No one would find me, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be in a position to do anything about it.

Zane crossed his arms, clearly still irritated as he spoke. “Valerie acting like this has everything to do with Damian. Ever since he took control of the Flores family and became the chief Gamma under the Alpha King, their entire family dynamic has changed.”

Briar, who had been quiet until now, added in a more measured tone, “He’s ruthless, and he doesn’t care about playing fair, but he’s effective. In just a few years, he’s strengthened the alliance’s military capabilities and expanded their business influence several times over.”

“And he spoils Valerie,” Tessa cut in, her frustration still obvious. “No matter what she does, he cleans up after her. The two of them are exactly the same.”

I didn’t respond right away, but I remembered every word.

Then I turned slightly toward Kade, letting a faint smile return. “Either way, he’s not going to pick a fight with the Howells without thinking it through,” I said calmly. “And as long as I still carry the title of your fiancée, he’d have to consider the consequences before touching me, wouldn’t he?”

The wording felt off, enough that I looked at him again, meeting his gaze with a faint frown before letting out a soft scoff.

Zane and Briar exchanged a look, then glanced back at us, clearly surprised by what they thought they were seeing.
