The moment Tessa said it out loud, Valerie went completely still, like the ground had just dropped out from under her. The hand holding her riding crop tightened until her knuckles turned pale.

She turned to Kade as if she needed him to deny it for her, her voice rising despite herself. You can’t be serious. Her? She doesn’t even have a wolf. How is she supposed to stand next to you? She’s not even close to your level.”

Kade didn’t entertain it for even a second. His expression cooled instantly, the warmth from earlier gone without a trace. That’s not your concern. Out of respect for the Flores family, I won’t make you apologize to my horse, but everything you damaged here will be paid for. I want it on my desk by noon tomorrow. If it’s late, the amount doubles.

There was nothing dramatic in the way he said it, which somehow made it land even harder.

Then he turned to me as if the conversation was already over, reaching for my hand with a calm, steady grip. Your hand’s injured. Let me take care of it.

I didn’t resist, just nodded and let him lead me away, because there was no reason to drag this out any longer.

We barely made it a few steps before something shifted behind us, the air tightening in that split second before it broke. I didn’t even need to look to know Valerie had lost control.

The crack of the riding crop slicing through the air came fast and vicious, aimed straight at my face, carrying all the resentment she hadn’t managed to swallow.

You think you can just walk away from this? I’ll deal with you myself!

Lyra surged inside me instantly, her anger rising like a storm breaking loose, but I stayed exactly where I was, already lifting my hand to intercept it. I didn’t need to dodge, and I certainly didn’t need to endure it.

Before I could move, Kade stepped in.

He caught the whip with his bare hand.

The impact stopped cold, the sharp snap of leather cutting off midair as if it had hit something unyielding. His grip locked around it with terrifying ease, the muscles in his arm tightening just enough to hold it in place, completely unmoved by the force behind it.

Valerie tried to pull it back, once, then harder the second time, but it didn’t budge even a fraction.

I looked up at him then, and that was when I saw his eyes.

Gold, unmistakable and sharp, carrying the quiet authority that came with the Alpha King bloodline, not loud, not exaggerated, but impossible to ignore. It wasn’t just anger, it was a warning, the kind that didn’t need to be repeated twice.

Valerie saw it too, because whatever she had left to say died in her throat as she instinctively stepped back.

Kade didn’t raise his voice or make a show of it. He simply held her there for a brief second longer before letting go.

The whip snapped back from the tension, cutting a harsh arc through the air before striking her across the body with full force. Her scream came out raw as she lost her balance, stumbling backward and collapsing onto the ground in a heap, her hair falling

loose, her face drained of color as pain and shock caught up with her at the same time.

If you try that again,Kade said, his voice low and cold enough to send a chill down anyone listening, even the Flores family won’t be able to protect you.”

That was the end of it.

Valerie didn’t argue, didn’t shout, didn’t even try to stand right away. She just stayed there, shaken and pale, her lips trembling without forming a single word.

Only then did I lower my hand.

If Kade hadn’t stepped in when he did, she wouldn’t have gotten off that easily, and we both knew it.

He led me inside without another glance back and started treating the cut on my hand, his movements controlled and careful, as if the tension outside had never happened. The Flores family is second only to the Howells,he said while wrapping the bandage neatly. If you’d seriously hurt Valerie, this wouldn’t have ended cleanly.

I know,I replied, because I did.

This situation could have escalated far beyond a simple confrontation, not because I couldn’t handle Valerie, but because there were still things I needed to do here, and dragging Tessa into unnecessary trouble wasn’t worth it.

But eventually,I added, my tone steady, they’ll figure out that I’m not someone they can push around.
