Chapter 22
Three years was enough time to change many things.
By the time she came back, everything would be different. Maybe Chris and Skyla would already be together.
Winter raised a hand and rubbed her brow. There she went again. She was slipping back into old habits, letting him take up space in her thoughts when he no longer had any right to be there.
Suddenly, a head leaned into view in front of her computer screen. “What are you doing? Don’t tell me you actually want to go.”
The interruption snapped Winter out of her thoughts. She pushed Wendy’s head away. “Smart girl. You guessed right.”
“Hey, don’t push me.” Wendy fussed as she smoothed her hair. “I spent all morning blow-drying this. You’re going to mess.it up.” She eyed Winter suspiciously. “Have you lost your mind?”
Winter smiled but said nothing. She clicked open the application link.
Before she could move the mouse, someone pressed down on it.
Winter raised an eyebrow and looked at Wendy.
Wendy’s pretty brows were drawn together, her expression unusually serious. “Have you read the requirements carefully? Once you go, it’s three full years.”
“I read every word. Even the punctuation.”
It was clear that she had already made up her mind.
Wendy released the mouse, crossed her arms, and looked down at Winter. “Other people go abroad to polish their resumes. You’re already one of the station’s top reporters. What are you trying to polish? Don’t say I didn’t warn you. By the time you come back, I might already be editor-in-chief. That means everything you did these past few years will count for nothing. Do you even realize that?”
As if another thought struck her, Wendy leaned forward, bracing her hands on Winter’s desk. Her expression grew even more serious. “You were beaten not long ago. Did they knock something loose in your head?”
Winter couldn’t help laughing. She rested her chin on one hand and casually played with the ends of Wendy’s hair with the other. A quiet warmth spread through her chest.
“Even though I feel a little unwilling to let go, I decided to be generous just this once,” she said lightly.” So I’ll wish you success in advance.”
Wendy’s expression changed slightly, “You’re serious?”
Winter nodded.

For a moment, Wendy’s gaze became complicated.
Then she snorted and said dismissively, “As if I would miss you. Go already. From now on, all the top performance reviews in our department will be mine.”
She huffed again and turned to leave.
Five minutes later, Winter stood outside Sam’s office and knocked.
The door opened. Sam had documents in one hand and his phone in the other, wedged between his shoulder and ear as he spoke. When he saw Winter, he paused, then let go of the door and adjusted his phone, gesturing for her to sit.
After he hung up, he walked behind his desk and looked her over. “Why do you look so pale?”
“I stayed up late.”
She wasn’t lying. It was just not the usual kind of staying up late.
She hadn’t been gaming, reading novels, or binge-watching shows.
She had been unable to sleep because of the divorce.
