Chapter 23
“Then can you help me?” Winter asked, looking at him.
Sam frowned.
He hadn’t expected so many people to be eyeing this position. In fact, he had heard about it even before the application portal opened. At the time, he never thought Winter would be interested, so he didn’t give her a heads-up.
Now that all the slots were filled, it was indeed difficult.
“King Sam, please help me just this once,” Winter said softly. “I really want to go.”
The editor-in-chief’s name was Sam Quinn. Among the senior staff, he was sometimes called “King Sam” in private, a half-joking nickname born of his authority and long years in the newsroom.
Hearing the title made Sam’s frown deepen.
“Hey, kid,” he said.
But when he met Winter’s calm yet determined gaze, he let out a sigh. “I’m afraid I can’t help you with this. Why don’t you ask Professor Freeman? He has strong connections. If he speaks to the people over there, adding one more person shouldn’t be a problem.”
Winter clenched her fingers slightly.
She had majored in international relations in graduate school, and Jimmy Freeman had been her advisor.
But he had another identity as well. He was Skyla’s uncle.
Winter knew very well that if Jimmy stepped in, this matter would definitely be resolved. Several of his most accomplished students now held high positions at the news agency.
She herself had once been one of his prized students.
Back then, when she gave up the chance to go abroad, Jimmy had been furious. He thought she was letting her emotions rule her decisions. Because of that, Winter hadn’t known how to face him over the past few years, and they hadn’t seen each other in a long time.
Looking back now, she realized that Jimmy had been right.
Winter left the office, opened her contacts, and found Jimmy’s number. After hesitating for a moment, she called.
The phone rang three times before it connected.
“Winter?”
She hadn’t expected Skyla’s voice on the other end.

Winter’s fingers tightened around her phone. “I am looking for Professor Freeman.”
Skyla replied, “He’s sick.”
Jimmy was Winter’s mentor. Even though they hadn’t been in close contact these past few years, hearing that he was ill made her put aside her work for the moment. She drove straight to the hospital.
When she reached the floor where Jimmy was hospitalized, Winter stepped out of the elevator and saw Skyla approaching in a wheelchair, being pushed by a caregiver.
Skyla lifted her head slightly and spoke in a gentle, composed voice. “Bad timing, Winter. He just fell asleep. His fever only came down recently, and he’s still very weak.”
Winter set the fruit basket down on the table in the outer area. “Then I’ll come back later.”
She turned to leave as soon as she put the basket down.
“Winter.”
Skyla called out to her.
