Chapter 26
Jimmy was a heavyweight in the domestic journalism world. Everyone gave him respect.
Not to mention that several senior leaders at the news agency had once been his students. With a single word from him, Winter’s problem could easily be resolved.
Looking at the middle-aged man, the gray at his temples catching her eye, Winter felt a surge of guilt. ” Professor, I truly know I was wrong.”
All of Jimmy’s students addressed him as Professor Freeman. Only Winter was allowed to call him simply Professor.
Even her senior classmates used to joke that she was his favorite, the one he had mentored most closely.
He adjusted the glasses on the bridge of his nose and let out a sigh. “Once you go abroad, it will be three years. Three years away from Chris. Can you really bear that? Or did Skyla’s return affect your relationship with him?”
Hearing those words, Winter felt nothing but irony. What relationship did she and Chris even have anymore? Even whatever bond they once shared was long gone.
She gave a bitter smile. “Professor, I came today to talk only about work.”
She knew where the boundaries were.
No matter how much Jimmy cared for her as a student, Skyla was still his niece. Being caught in the middle would put him in an awkward position, so Winter chose not to bring up personal feelings.
Seeing that she was still the same sensible, tactful girl he remembered, Jimmy felt conflicted.
At last, he voiced his real concern.
“Eveland is at war right now. It’s extremely dangerous. Do you think those people signed up just to polish their resumes? They all know the risks and have prepared themselves mentally. You’re my student. I can’t send you into a place like that.”
Only then did Winter understand why Jimmy had refused to help her from the start.
She felt ashamed for having thought that he was still angry about what happened four years ago.
But she didn’t want to give up this opportunity.
“Professor, I still remember what you said the first day I attended your class,” Winter said, looking at him with steady resolve. “You said that in our line of work, wherever the truth needs to be seen by the world, that is where we go.
“I’m not afraid of death.”
Jimmy’s brow furrowed deeply. “You have such a good memory, and that is the one line you remember? I

spent so long lecturing you back then, and you didn’t take in a single word.”
Winter lowered her head and accepted the scolding, but there was not the slightest hint of compromise in her posture.
Jimmy knew her well. She was stubborn to the core.
“All right,” he finally said. “I’ll give you two months to think it over. Even those who have applied still need to go through review, which will take about two months anyway. If you are still determined to go after two months, I’ll pull the strings for you.”
Winter’s eyes lit up.
He took off his glasses, looked at her seriously, and said, “You have a history. I am afraid you’ll change your mind again at the last minute and embarrass me.”
“I promise I will not this time,” Winter said, raising her hand as if swearing an oath.
Jimmy lifted the hand holding his glasses and pointed at her. “You said the same thing back then when I helped you secure that spot. And what happened? You gave up your future for a man.
“You already have a record with me. If it were not for your mom’s sake, I would not bother with you at all.”
