Chapter 23 Surgery Failed!
Shadowrend didn’t understand the game very well.
He’s unsure of Alden’s reasoning behind his actions.
However, he still chose to put his trust in Alden.
After Alden repeatedly attacked and injured Elvaris using the Twisted Arrow Technique, Shadowrend made his move.
With five consecutive critical hits, each one causing bleeding, Elvaris was taken down.

“Server–wide announcement: Congratulations to the player with the hidden nickname for being the first to kill Elvaris. This announcement is made with the hope that all players will continue to strive forward.”
At Rookie Village, Village Keeper’s Courtyard.
Village Keeper’s face suddenly shifted upon hearing the notification.
He had felt a bit thrilled when he learned that Sam and Seth were defeated.
However, that excitement quickly faded within ten minutes when he heard the server–wide announcement about his subordinate Elvaris being killed.
“Search his body.”
Alden approached Elvaris and quickly discovered the Icenfire Ore.
“I’m keeping this.”
Shadowrend frowned since it was the item for his quest.
“You can’t retrieve this, and I’m not using it to complete the quest,” Alden clarified, as he needed Shadowrend’s help for the next step.
“Everything else on Elvaris is yours.”
Hearing this, Shadowrend’s eyes brightened.
He hurried over to search the body.
After finishing looting the body, Shadowrend’s expression seemed more relaxed.
Meanwhile, Alden was also searching along Sam and Seth’s bodies.
Ding! “You’ve gained +1 insight into repairing weapons below bronze level.”
Ding! “You’ve obtained 12 pieces of equipment.”

Alden gathered all the things before turning to Shadowrend.
“Now that all three NPCs are dead, go back and report to the Village Keeper that you ran into Sam and Seth on the road and, with help from your guild, defeated them.”
Shadowrend was a bit shocked after hearing this.
“Do you think Village Keeper will actually believe that?”
Alden replied, “He will because he has no proof that you’re lying.”
“And what about you?” Shadowrend asked.
Alden grinned and said, “I’ll simply say I only saw you take down Sam and Seth. As for Elvaris, I didn’t see anything.”
Shadowrend felt cornered by this explanation.
“But what if Roland and Village Keeper compare stories? Won’t I get caught?
“Also, if Village Keeper asks who defeated Elvaris, how am I supposed to answer?”
Alden remarked, “Just tell him you don’t know. Say Elvaris was already dead when you entered the cave.”
Shadowrend went quiet for a moment before asking, “Can you explain why you’re doing this?”
“It’s for a larger quest,” Alden replied with determination.
He was even thinking about skipping Village Keeper’s task of hunting ten bosses to focus on completing the quest from the Quest
Scroll.
After finishing his talk with Shadowrend, he finally smiled.
Once Shadowrend left, Alden pulled out the Corpse Energy Flask.
Corpse Energy Flask: special item.
Effect: After defeating humanoid monsters, adventurers, and NPCs, you can gather corpse energy. Once the flask is full, a special quest may be unlocked.
Progress: 46/100.
Alden raised an eyebrow as he absorbed the corpse energy from Sam, Seth, and Elvaris, pushing the progress from 46 to 49.
Fifty one more corpse energy were needed to fill the flask.
Still, he felt no rush.
If he couldn’t gather enough corpse energy later, he might have to turn his focus to those unsuspecting players.

Glancing at the time, he made his way back to the Rookie Village.
He stepped into the Ironsmith Shop.
“Roland, I apologize, I still haven’t located Elvaris, but I did hear the announcement that he was killed.”
Alden acted confused, as though this situation had nothing to do with him.

Roland studied him carefully and asked, “Frost King, aside from you, who in our village has the power to eliminate Elvaris and my two apprentices?”
This time, Roland didn’t refer to Alden as just another adventurer but used his game nickname directly.
Alden realized that he was growing suspicious of him.
“Roland, I have no motive for this. There are others with strong abilities in the village. I was ambushed by an assassin earlier, and my partner was killed instantly.”
Upon hearing this, Roland frowned deeply, scrutinizing Alden, as if searching for any signs of deception.
Still, he couldn’t detect anything.
“It’s unfortunate about my two apprentices.
“Even more so for the Icenfire Ore, if you could assist me in locating it, I would reward you with a Platinum Level necklace.”
Ding! “Roland Ironsmith has assigned you a quest.”
“Quest requirement: Locate Icenfire Ore.”
“Quest penalty: None.”
“Quest reward: Platinum Level necklace +1.”
Alden raised an eyebrow. Roland seemed quite eager.
He must really need that Icenfire Ore to offer such a generous reward.
At this point in the game, even a Gold Level weapon is considered too powerful, and a Platinum Level item could completely disrupt the game’s balance.
“Alright, I’ll do my best.”
Alden accepted the quest, though he had no intention of handing over the item anytime soon.
“Frost King, I’ll be waiting for your good news.”
