Chapter 187 Mutant Boxwood

Caroline’s flashlight swept across the hall, then quickly flicked back.

There, on the window ledge, was a potted boxwoodlush, green, and perfectly trimmed into shape.

The purple clay pot beneath it read AbundanceIts fanshaped leaves were vibrant and full of

life

Before the apocalypse, anyone would have praised it as a beautifully maintained plant.

But now, it sent chills down Caroline’s spine.

When she came upstairs earlier, that pot definitely had not been there.

The words mutant plant flashed through her mind.

Mutant plants came in levelssome mild, like spinach or tomatoes, and others deadly, like mutant cacti.

Caroline had seen many in her previous life, twisted weeds with little threat, or houseplants like pothos that could whip and strangle like snakes.

But the one she would never forget was a cactus.

A man in her team opened a door and was instantly skewered into a human pincushion.

Two long spikes pierced through his eyes and out the back of his skull, his brain matter splattering everywhere..

The ones through his neck were not any smaller.

The man then died on the spot.

That cactus had intelligence. It knew where to strike.

Caroline only survived because she was behind him.

Back then, the room had a lot of supplies. After a long discussion, the group finally grabbed a riot shield they had found earlier and rushed inside.

Another woman ended up dying before they managed to take down that mutant cactus.

Chapter 187 Mutant Boxwood

Now, at the end of the dark hallway, the mutant boxwood stretched out its branches.

Its needlesglimmered sharply under Caroline’s headlamp..

The boxwood was first found on Mount Yellowmere.

The pine trees there had a special shapetheir branches grew out to one side, as if they were greeting guests.

For regular potted bonsai pines, though, the name just came from how people trimmed and shaped them.

When the pine was young, people used wires and other tools to bend its branches and cut off

the extra ones.

Over time, after years of trimming, the tree would look like it was bowing slightly, its arms open wide to welcome visitors.

In other words, this kind of plant had been designed and shaped by people.

It probably held a grudge against humans.

All these thoughts flashed through Caroline’s mind in a split second. She quickly took out the steel plates she had stored in her space and stacked them up in front of her, forming a solid wall.

Clang! Clang! Clang! Sounds echoed through the empty hallway.

One of the thinner plates was pierced straight througha pine needle stuck out right in front of her face.

Beside her, Raven bared his teeth, backing up with her cautiously.

Caroline thought of how she had handled the mutant cactus in her previous lifewith fire.

But she could not use it now.

This was her first mutant plant, and it was strong.

If she managed to capture it, it could greatly boost her space’s energy and level.

Her mind raced until an idea came to her.

She did not need to destroy the pine; she just needed to take it into her space.

With that thought, Carolein had an idea.

The pine seemed to realize its needles could not get through the steel.

After one last hit, it stopped wasting them.

Caroline took a deep breath, touched the metal wall, and absorbed it back into her space.

For a second, the pine froze and suddenly fired out a storm of needles.

At that moment, Caroline started thinking faster.

She threw out piles of bedsheets of every colorred, green, even cartoonprinted onesall from that 12story building she had looted earlier.

They dropped down like a giant, airtight net.

Each layer slowed the pine needles until they lost all their force.

At the same time, Caroline pulled Raven back.

One giant needle still managed to pierce through hundreds of layers, but by the time it reached her, it had run out of strength and fell to the ground in a curve.

Under hundreds of tightly pressed sheets, the mutant pine could no longer moveonly a faint bulge showed where it was trapped.
