Chapter 348 The Zero System Update

Just as Caroline was celebrating her new discovery, the screen in front of her suddenly changed.

A line of bold text appeared. “The Zero System trial has ended. The official version is now online.”

Before she could even react, more words appeared on the screen.

Official Version Instructions:

1. 1. Caroline can gain another creature’s ability by touching it. But this only works if she already has the matching color energy for that ability. Usually, she can use the copied ability five times. If she touches the same creature again, the count resets.

Caroline was thunderstruck.

So, even if she managed to collect ten thousand abilities, she could only use three per day, and they were random? She couldn’t even pick them herself!

Sure, she could refresh the choices twice a day, but still–what a rip–off!

She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. The Zero System wasn’t permanent; it could be upgraded later. All she needed was to find more colored energy.

“Come on, Caroline,” she told herself. “You can still use other people’s abilities. That’s already a huge win.”

Besides, she already had her water ability, and not just any water power–it was complete, a full–spectrum ability that might even evolve later with more features and hidden skills.

As for the Zero System’s random setup … yes, it was frustrating.

But it also meant she technically had access to every ability out there, even if limited by uses. She could treat it as a secret weapon, something unexpected in a fight.

In her past life, she had never heard of anyone possessing more than two abilities.

Just touch someone to gain theirs? That alone was beyond incredible.

Caroline sighed, smiled a little, and used what she called mental self–encouragement. It was her way of pulling herself out of disappointment and back into confidence.

Just then, Caroline heard a noise from the bedroom.

Denton was awake.

He rubbed his head, still looking dazed.

Silver fluttered over to him, chirping excitedly.

“Caroline … did I just pass out too?” he asked, his voice a little shaky.

Caroline quickly handed him a glass of water.

She remembered how thirsty she had felt when she first woke up.

Denton probably felt the same.

He gulped it down in one go and asked in confusion. “What happened to me?”

Caroline smiled faintly and showed him her ability.

Denton’s eyes lit up with excitement. “So that means–I awakened too?”

Eager to try, he closed his eyes and focused his thoughts.

A second later, a horrible stench filled the room. Caroline’s nose twitched. The smell hit like a punch.

Even Denton looked stunned.

Silver flapped her wings and flew to the far side of the room, watching her human from a safe distance.

And then Denton’s body began to change.

Brown, bark–like plates spread across his skin, rough and solid.

His arms and legs grew strange yellow rings, and with the stench surrounding him.

He looked disturbingly like a giant stink bug.

Denton’s face twisted in despair. He nearly cried. “Caroline, w–what kind of ability is this?”

Caroline took two cautious steps forward and patted his shoulder.

Then she quietly opened her Zero System.

Under the yellow energy bar, a new line appeared.

Mutated Earth Ability: I Stink, So What.

Description: The odor produced can repel most living creatures, delivering both physical and psychological damage. Prolonged use may cause the user to enjoy it. If Caroline uses it, others might just think she ate something strange last night.

Caroline sighed, feeling an odd mix of pity and amusement. Such a good–looking boy, and this is his power?

Little did she know, Denton’s “stink ability” was actually one of the best.

When this ability was upgraded later, the stench became so powerful that anyone who smelled it would be briefly paralyzed. It turned out to be perfect for team battles.
