Chapter 547 It’s Far More Violent

The glass dome could open and close by itself. On normal days, it stayed open so sunlight could get in, but it would automatically rise whenever danger appeared.

It was super handy.

When the dome was raised, the entire base looked like a gorgeous fortress from the outside.

For this defense upgrade, the base gave itself a name–Turtle–Shell Unbreakable Shield. It sounded clunky, but it worked well enough.

The ground started shaking while everyone happened to be in the yard.

In the distance, the clouds glowed bright red, like half the sky was on fire.

The tremors got worse and worse, strong enough that it was hard to keep their balance.

Even so, the base stood solid, without the slightest sign of collapse.

Suddenly, a deafening boom echoed from the mountain behind them. The terrified cries of birds and animals rang out one after another.

Flocks of birds shot up from the mountain, swarming into the sky in a chaotic wave, fleeing as fast as they could.

Overhead, the frantic beating of wings filled the air, so loud and close it made their hearts race.

Caroline and the others watched as the huge mountain swayed, as if it could topple at any second.

Finally, the mountain could no longer withstand the violent tremors. Rocks and dirt came crashing down in a rolling surge.

Even from a distance, they could hear the cries of animals, like they were being crushed under the falling debris.

In that moment, nature opened its bloody jaws once more, swallowing fragile lives whole.

The earthquake continued, accompanied by endless wailing.

But the base’s defenses held strong. No buildings were damaged.

After the first tremor passed, the base remained intact, still holding plenty of strength.

Seeing everyone still standing dumbly in the yard, she waved them off. “Forget it for now.

“The first wave has passed. Let’s go inside and rest.”

Everyone relaxed and headed back indoors.

Tyler looked at Caroline. “Are you hungry?”

She nodded lightly. “A little.”

Without another word, he went to cook.

Nelson stayed outside, staring at the wall and rubbing his chin thoughtfully. It looked like he’d found a new subject for research.

Previously, he’d tried to scrape material off the wall for testing. But even after exhausting himself, he couldn’t peel off a single layer. It had frustrated him.

Denton, meanwhile, went to check on his mutant rat army, telling them not to hide. The base was safe. They could come out and stroll around.

Lately, he had bathed the rats and dug a sand pit for them in a base corner to clean themselves whenever. He even had Nelson develop special vaccines for them–just in case they carried bacteria or viruses.

He really cared for those rats.
